Wednesday, March 16, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon 23 Girls lacrosse hopes to take their game to a new level By rongi yost Correspondent The girls lacrosse team returns 10 players to a squad that looks to be very strong and competitive this season. Four seniors are back for their final appearance, including Sierra Hummel, Mackenzie Hendrickson, Marissa Young and Taylor Schneider. Hummell will play at both defense and midfield, and according to Coach Mikaela Trott, Sierra is tall, driven, smart and a very strong player. She will be the guiding force on the defense. Hendrickson will be a key defensive player for the Outlaws, as she leads through communication. She has the ability to rally the rest of the defense. Young is one of the Outlaws’ captains, and will play midfield and center. Trott told The Nugget that Marissa is quick, strong, and intense. Young also plays rugby, and it shows in lacrosse in her aggressiveness and strength. Trott said, “Marissa is a great leader and always gives 100 percent to every game and practice.” Schneider rounds out the returning senior players. Taylor is also a captain and a great leader, and will play attack for the Outlaws. Taylor takes smart shots on goal, and has the ability to place them where she wants. She is also a very quick cutter, which gives her a big advantage against her opponents. Bree Papworth is the lone junior that returns to the varsity team. Attack is Papworth’s preferred position, but she is also a very smart player on defense. She has played as goalie for the past two seasons. Five sophomores round out the returning varsity players: Addy Baney, Keely Roberson, Katelyn Josten, McKenna Jones and Makila Lajko. Baney became the Outlaws’ goalie mid-season of 2015, and will return to that post. Roberson will play defense, and Josten will play in the midfield. Katelyn is quick and athletic, and has a huge potential to become a —Join us— Thursday, Mar 17 ST. Jones has very strong endur- ance and will play in the midfield. Trott stated that McKenna has smart vision and intuition, and is probably the player she is most interested to see develop. Lajko will play attack, and according to Trott she is a silent and patient attack player. Makila will also be the Outlaws’ back-up goalie when Marissa is a great leader and always gives 100 percent to every game and practice. — Coach Mikaela Trott 10 goals a game, and 120 for the season. They want to learn and execute three solid plays, and also maintain good grades. They hope to take girls lacrosse at Sisters High School to a new level of athleticism; and finally they plan to work with the middle school team to prepare them for their future years at the high school level. Sisters was to play against Redmond on Monday, March 14, and two days later at South Salem High School, with a start time of 5:30 p.m. they need her in a pinch. Senior Addie Elson will rejoin the squad this year. Elson played her sophomore year, but this will be her first year with Coach Trott. “I don’t know Addie’s style because she’s only had two practices with me,” said Trott. Although they are new to varsity, they are not new to the sport. They all possess great skills and understand the game.
