Wednesday, March 9, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Library issues call to artists Friends of the Sisters Library Art Committee and Deschutes Public Library Art Committees are joining with the “A Novel Idea” project to host art shows inspired by the 2016 selection, “Euphoria” by Lily King. This exhibition is open to all artists, photog- raphers, and artisans residing in Central Oregon. The exhibition will hang at Sisters Library from April 1-30. Intake of artwork is March 31 from 3 to 5:30 p.m. The Sisters, Sunriver, and Downtown Bend librar- ies will feature art that was created with King’s novel in mind. The setting for “Euphoria” is New Guinea in the 1930s. King’s novel is inspired by the life of revolution- ary anthropologist Margaret Mead. “Euphoria” is the story of three young, gifted anthropologists caught up in a passionate love triangle that threatens their bonds, their careers, and ultimately, their lives. The three participants interact on a variety of lev- els: emotional, intellec- tual, romantic and sexual. Complicated, multi-level interactions of power, desire, and intention lead to vio- lence, with themes of gender relations, female sexuality, obsession, and the discovery of personal truth and inner light (the Euphoria). Hummingbirds coming to The Belfry By Jim anderson Spring is scholarship season in Sisters Sisters High School (SHS) seniors are working to com- plete their scholarship appli- cations by the 5 p.m., April 6 deadline. The local scholar- ships can be found online at www.sistersgro.com. They have been shared with seniors via their high school email and ASPIRE volunteer men- tors and are also available in the ASPIRE office at the high school. OSU Ornithologist and Associate Professor Matt Betts will share his research on one of the favor- ites of Sisters Country: hummingbirds. The illustrated lecture is free, but you must RSVP. As residents of Sisters Country noticed at Dr. Robert Collins’ lecture at the Sisters Library recently, Sisters Science Club lectures fill up very quickly. The title of Dr. Betts’ lec- ture will be: “Hummingbird Highways: Conserving Pollination in Tropical Forest Landscapes.” As tropical forests become increasingly broken up by roads, logging, farm fields, pastures and other devel- opments, corridors of trees providing vital pathways for pollinators — including hum- mingbirds — are vanishing rapidly. The same can be said for forests habitat and hum- mingbirds throughout North America. Follow OSU ornithologist and teacher Matt Betts’ jour- ney tracing the movement of tropical hummingbird spe- cies through patches of trees and the pollination of plants within the tree patches. The Belfry will open at 6 p.m. for refreshments; the lecture will begin at 7 p.m. Rima Givot, science teacher at Sisters High School SHS has worked with Dr. Betts as part of her master’s degree program, and shared this information about him: “He studies birds and has done lots of research on hummingbirds.
