The year’s theme, “A Race for the Roses,” brought more than 160 people to FivePine Lodge & Conference Center, where hearty Southern-style appetizers, mint juleps and fun bidding were enjoyed by all. The emcees for the eve- ning, Dr. Kevin and Dr. Eden Miller, kept things lively by jokingly predicting dire med- ical problems for folks who didn’t enter into the silent auction. Board chair Peter Storton thanked all of the guests, volunteers, and teach- ers for making this “our best auction ever.” Then Principal Cheryl Peterson shared her amaze- ment over the quality of edu- cation the students receive at SCA, the high caliber of photo provided It looked like Kentucky Derby day at FivePine Lodge & conference center. teachers who pour their lives into the students, and the many families who make their school a wonderful place to be. Guests dressed in their Kentucky Derby-style fin- est raised their paddles often and high to bid on everything from trips to Costa Rica or Kauai, to baskets filled with beautiful creations made by the children and staff. Most of the items were donated by local businesses and friends of the school. “This is just another example of how people in Sisters support each other,” said one guest as he happily carried his winnings to his car. Inmate convicted in girlfriend’s murder dies UMATILLA (AP) — Oregon prison officials say a 60-year-old inmate serving time for murdering his girl- friend has died at a Portland- area hospital after being found unresponsive in his cell. He died at about 5 p.m. The Bend Bulletin reports that Abbott was serving a life sentence for killing 35-year- old Carolann Payne. She was 35 when she disappeared in 1985. Despite searches, her body was never found. Abbott lived in Redmond at the time Payne went missing. He was arrested in Portland in May 1992 fol- lowing a lengthy investiga- tion by the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office. The evening will include a display of talent from each contestant, swimwear and formalwear presentation, and a series of competitive ques- tions to be answered by the contestants. Five judges will tally up points at the end of the eve- ning leading to the presti- gious honor of crowning one winning contestant as Mr. SHS 2016. Refreshments will be available during intermission at minimal cost. Proceeds from the event will benefit Sisters Family Access Network (FAN) which provides social ser- vices to local students and families. Last year FAN served over 755 clients in need of emergency rental/ utility assistance, clothing/ school supplies for students, Oregon Health Plan medi- cal insurance support, and more. The annual Mr. SHS (Sisters High School) pag- eant is scheduled for Friday, March 4, at SHS auditorium at 7 p.m. Each year SHS staff mem- bers select eight senior boys and eight senior girls to par- ticipate in the pageant. The selected are students that excel in leadership, com- munity service, academics, the arts, sports, and/or have been active and dynamic Outlaws during their time at SHS. The contestants and their escorts are: Seth Larson/ Maggie Bidesolo; Steen Johnson/Taylor Eagan; Rob Merola/Tara Greaney; Ross Grant/Chelsey Shepard; J a d o n B a c h t o l d / Te s s a O’Hern; Rory Petterson/Michaela Miller; Tristan Kaczmarek/ Kayla Neil; Sam Patton/ Betsey Ausman. They have been all been busy since December preparing for Friday night. This year’s theme, “Once Upon A Time,” will take the audience to a land of enchantment as the students will display their charac- ters of Kristoff and Anna; Peter Pan and Wendy; Mary Poppins and Bert; Shrek and Fiona; Tarzan and Jane; Kylo Ren and Rey; Mr. and Red Zone Blazer Channel Catch it all in our back room!
