Wrestlers compete at regionals

Sisters brought 21 grap-
plers to compete at the
Regional Championships
heldatElmiraonFridayand
Saturday, February 19 and
20, and earned a 10th-place
finish.
Sweet Home wrestlers
dominatedthematandtook
first place with a team total
of376points.NorthMarion
wasrunner-upwith304and
Cascadetookthirdwith249.
Two Outlaws, seniors
DyutFetrowandZachReid,
finished third and fourth
respectively, which earned
thembothaberthtothestate
championships.
Fetrow(138pounds)was
seededfifthandhad21wres-
tlersinhisweightclass.Due
tothehighnumber,Dyuthad
towrestleinapigtailmatch,
andhadtowininordertoget
agoodspotinthebracket.
Dyutwonbyafallin3:22
againstAmersonofYamhill-
Carltoninthepigtailmatch,
and went on to pin Dylan
DonnellofPhilomathin1:18
inhisfirstmatchofbracket
competition.
In his second match,
Fetrow pinned No. 4 seed
AlecRobertsofNorthMarion
in 3:13. In the next match,
FetrowfacedNo.1seedJoe
RasmussenofSweetHome,
whichwashistoughestmatch
ofthetournament.Dyutwent
allthreeroundsbutlostina
9-4decision.
“Thatwasthebestmatch
I’veeverseenDyutwrestle,”
saidCoachJohnDowns.“He
gaveeverythinghehad,and
wassoexhaustedattheend
ofthematchhecouldbarely
standup.”
The loss sent Fetrow
into the consolation semis
wherehematchedupagainst
Connor Kelly of Cascade.
Dyut pinned Kelly in 1:50,
which qualified him for the
third/fourth-place match.
Dyut wrestled No. 3 seed
Rodney Chamberlain of
Cottage Grove, battled hard
all three rounds, earned the
win in a 8-6 decision. The
winearnedhimathird-place
finish.
“It was a super-excit-
ing match,” said Downs.
“Dyut was seeded fifth and
Chamberlain was seeded
third,andtheybothhadgood
skills.Dyuthadmuchbetter
cardio, and he had a lot of
strengthleft,andscoredtwo
points on a take-down and
wonthematch.”

Fetrow said, “I feel really
excitedaboutqualifyingfor
state.I’veworkedreallyhard
and it’s a big accomplish-
ment. It also means a lot to
the coaches to see how far
we’ve come. I just want to
go to state and enjoy it and
ifIplace,Iplace,andifnot,
that’sokay,too.”
Reidearedafourth-place
finish, which also qualified
himforthestate champion-
shipsnextweekend.
Zach (132 pounds) had
to face No. 1 seed Casey
Roberts of North Marion in
his very first match of the
tourney. Reid went a full
roundwithRoberts,butthen
lostbyafallin2:54.
“Zachwasn’tevenseeded,
andhedidverywellagainst
agoodwrestler,”saidDowns.
ThelosssentReidintothe
consolationbracket,whichis
alwaystough.Awrestlerhas
to come back and win four
matchestomakeittothecon-
solationfinals.
Reid did just that, and
pinned his next four oppo-
nents. Zach pinned Dakota
Elliott of Cascade in 2:52;
pinned Travis Hodgson
of Junction City, who was
seeded fifth, in 1:42; and
pinned Nathan Payne of
Yamhill-Carltonin2:27.Zach
realizedthatthenextmatch
was critical, and that a win
wouldguaranteehimaberth
to state. Reid did a tremen-
dous job and pinned Wyatt
HaverstitchofNorthMarion,
theNo.3seed,in3:02.
Inthefinals,Reidwentup

fourth-place finish, which
stillqualifiedhimforstate.
“I was surprised at how
wellhedid,especially after
his loss to the No. 1 seed,”
said Downs. “I was glad to
