Agatheringofflickersis referredtoasa“guttering”or “menorah.” The northern flicker occurs in either red-shafted westoftheRockyMountains, oryellow-shaftedintheeast- ernU.S.,andwillhybridizeto yieldvariousshaftcolorand headpatterncombinations. Gaffer, hairy-wicket, heigh-ho,gawkerandyellow- hammerarejustafewofthe flicker’snicknames.In1927, the“yellowhammer”became thestatebirdofAlabama. Nesting in tree cavities, the northern flicker lays fivetoeightwhiteeggsthat incubatefor11-13daysand fledgein24-27days.Unlike otherwoodpeckers,theywill often use the same nest in consecutiveyears. Some northern flick- ers stay in our region year-round; however most migrate to warmer southern areas including Mexico and Cuba.
