That’s clear from all of the popular diets and nutritionbooksonbestseller lists.Peopleworkhardtobe healthy, but the information they get is confusing. Being skeptical about nutrition informationwillhelpseparate thechafffromthegrain,”Dr. GonsalvestoldThe Nugget. Her presentation will be a scientific look at many of the nutrition myths that are currently being promoted in books,magazines,ontheair- waves,andtheInternet. Drink eight glasses of water.Don’teatgluten.Sugar istheproblem.Fatistheprob- lem. Gonsalves will present thefactsasshedissectssome of the common myths that drive our nutritional “rules” andwillexplainwhatresearch hastosayaboutthem. ABendnativewhoremem- bers a small town of 10,000 people, Gonsalves has lived hereallofherlife,withmulti- pleexcursionsoutofthestate and country. As a teenager, Gonsalves moved to Africa with her parents and two youngerbrothersforayear. Hermothersaid,“Wehave too much and they have too little.Weneedtogohelp.” Gonsalvesrecounted,“We lived in the bush where my dad, a physician, opened an outpatientclinicandmymom didpublichealththings,like startingimmunizationclinics and educating people about how to protect themselves from hookworm and other parasites.Iworkedintheout- patient clinic, helping in the pharmacy.” After returning to Bend fromAfrica,Gonsalveswent ontoearnbothherBachelor and Master of Science in NutritionfromOregonState UniversityinCorvallis.After collegeshereturnedtoBend toopenaprivatepracticeas a medical nutrition therapist at Bend Memorial Clinic, a positionsheheldforover20 years.Duringthistimeperiod shewasalsoapart-timesci- ence instructor at COCC, as wellastheprogramdesigner and director of the Dietary ManagerCertificateProgram atCOCC. In 2001 she became a full-time associate professor ofhumanbiologyandallied health,apositionshecurrently holds.In2009shecompleted her Doctor of Education in EducationalLeadershipfrom LewisandClarkCollege.
