10 Wednesday, February 10, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Outlaws beat the Bulldogs on the road By Rongi Yost Correspondent The Outlaws recorded a 55-38 road win over the Sutherlin Bulldogs on Friday, February 5, which gave them their second league win in a row, and pushed their record to an even 3-3 in Sky-Em play. Sisters played an out- standing game, and beat the Bulldogs in each quarter. The Outlaws jumped out with a 13-5 lead to close out the first quarter and never looked back. The Outlaws were patient on offense and took good shots at the basket, which converted into points on the scoreboard. Sisters also had rock-solid defense throughout, and there were many great defensive efforts by several players. Steen Johnson defended a very tough Jackson Shelton and held him to seven points in the game. The Outlaws were able to contain most of the Bulldogs, with the exception of Cody Brownson, Sutherlin’s ath- letic post, who was able to put up 22 points. “We had trouble control- ling him (Brownson) in the middle, and he had most of their points,” said Coach Rand Runco. “We had to give up something, and by staying home on their other scorers, we did not allow kick-outs. That forced us to play him one-on-one, and he is tough.” But Brownson wasn’t enough to overcome the Outlaws’ great effort. Keegan Greaney was able to get in the lane and went nine-for-12 from the line. Scott Waddell consistently hit his open shots throughout the contest, and Tyler Head was a beast on the boards. Head had great put-backs and shut down Wryland Mcknight, one of Sutherlin’s key players. Runco told The Nugget that the Outlaws gave up too many rebounds in the first half, but did a much better job on the glass in the second half. Ben Saba also played good defense for the Outlaws and was two-for-three from behind the arc. The Outlaws got a spark from Jonathon Bertagna, who came in off the bench for key minutes. Jonathon hit a great shot to give the Outlaws momentum as they headed into the final quarter. Greaney led the Outlaws with 14 points, and Waddell recorded 10. Head tallied eight points and Saba added six. Sisters was to play at Cottage Grove on Tuesday, February 9. The Outlaws will take on the Sweet Home Huskies at home in Sisters on Friday, February 12. Firefighters and support- ers from Black Butte Ranch, Cloverdale, and Sisters-Camp Sherman fire districts col- lected donations to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Last year, local fire- fighters participated in this event which raised over $2.2 million for this charity. Firefighters could be found at Dutch Bros. Coffee, Ray’s Food Place, and Mainline Station. Besides allowing firefighters to solicit donations, Dutch Bros. also donated $1 for every cup of coffee sold Saturday to the fundraising campaign. This brought in an extra $668. The local firefighters have set a fundraising goal of $20,000 this year. So far they are more than halfway there with donations of over $12,000. Firefighters will continue to be out in the community working toward their $20,000 goal through February. Each of these firefight- ers will compete for brag- ging rights with 1,900 others next month when they climb 69 stories of the Columbia Tower in Seattle, while wear- ing full firefighting gear in a timed event. Although individual members of these local agencies have competed in the past, this year the group has formed a regional team called the Sisters Country Firefighters for the 25th anniversary of the Seattle Firefighter Stairclimb. These firefighters would like to especially thank Dutch Bros. Coffee, Ray’s Food Place, and Mainline Station for allowing them to conduct their fundraising efforts at these businesses.
