24 Wednesday, January 20, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Science Fair gearing up Gingerbread trail winners announced The fifth annual Sisters Science Fair will be held Saturday, February 20 from noon until 4 p.m. at Sisters High School. The theme for this year’s fair is “Outdoor Science” and there will be plenty of exhibits, demon- strations and contests to keep everyone from all ages busy and engaged. “We have an extensive variety of exciting experi- ments and displays from all three Sisters schools, commu- nity businesses, universities and statewide organizations,” said Cal Allen, director of the Sisters Science Fair. “The Science Fair continues to grow every year, and every- one who attends is amazed at the diversity. There’s always a “gee-whiz” excitement with plenty to appeal to every attendee.” Healthy living and green energy programs will have displays from greenhouse gardening to organic veg- etables in the Seed-To-Table program. The planetarium will be set up and students, teachers, and astronomy vol- unteers will be on hand to explain the night sky. A 3-D printer will be set up to aston- ish your imagination with fascinating possibilities of this new technology. Mousetrap cars will fill the gym for the popular Design, Construct, Compete (DCC) contest. Anyone can enter and the challenge is to build a mousetrap car. Entrants must build a device that runs — and stops — using only mousetrap power. It’s sure to present both sci- entific marvels and lots of entertainment. If you’re interested in entering your own mouse- trap car, registration forms can be downloaded from the Sisters Science Club website at www.sistersscienceclub. org. Registration forms along with the $25 deposit (refund- able at the competition) are due by February 5. Rules and registration forms for the popular Science Fair SciArt contest are also available at the Sisters Science Club website, and entries must be submitted no later than February 12. The Sisters Science Fair is free and open to the public. Cascade Street Distillery was the people’s choice winner for the 9th Annual Sisters Habitat for Humanity Gingerbread Trail event. Customers dropped more than $500 into the donation house at the distillery location at 261 W. Cascade Ave. The distillery gingerbread barn fit right into Sisters Country with its shredded wheat roof and graham cracker barn doors. Katie Beasley from Cascade Street Distillery said she and her cousins made the gingerbread house and they were happy to sup- port such a great program in Sisters. This is the first year that Cascade Street Distillery has participated in the event, and Beasley said they look forward to participating next year. Coming in second was Ray’s Food Place with their big gingerbread village. Third place went to U.S. Bank. That gingerbread house was made to look like the house from the Disney movie “UP” and it included the balloons rising out of the roof. Sisters Habitat photo proviDeD And the winner is...
