4 Wednesday, January 13, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Skiers place seventh in giant slalom Girls play close game against Panthers While snow and freez- ing fog descended upon Mt. Bachelor last Saturday, the Oregon High School ski teams lined up for the first race of the 2016 season. Sisters High School was one of 13 teams and 130 racers from across the state competing for top rankings in the alpine giant slalom race. The racers maneu- vered a grueling course run- ning the entire length of the mountain, challenging the skiers’ technical skills and stamina. Team co-captain, senior Cammi Benson, placed in the top 10, with a ninth-place overall finish. “Cammi had two very smooth runs, her technique looked great. She was con- sistent and didn’t make any mistakes. That’s what got her into the top-10 awards,” said Head Coach Greg Ausman. Betsy Ausman, also a senior and co-captain for the alpine team, placed 17th. “The course was really fun. It had a great flow all the way down,” reported Ausman after her second run. Rounding out the wom- en’s team for this race is sophomore Holland Hartman. She placed 42nd for her first time in a giant slalom race. “Holland is new to ski racing, and I’m proud of how she is making improve- ments every time she runs a course,” said Assistant Coach Kelly Davis Martin. Returning to the men’s team this year is Lachlan Wood, who placed 32nd overall. “Lachlan is the veteran on the men’s team, and he is doing great,” said Coach Ausman. Also new to ski racing this year is junior Sam Lewis, who placed 36th in his first giant slalom race. “Sam is learning the The Lady Outlaws battled hard in the second half on the road against the Redmond Panthers, but came up four points short in the 52-48 loss on Friday, January 8. It was a tough first two quarters for the Outlaws, and as teams headed into halftime Sisters was down by 10 with a score of 27-17. The Lady Outlaws refused to quit, and came out hard in the second half. They fought back and outscored the Panthers 31-25, and at one point tied the game. Sadly, they came up short by four. Sisters gave up six three- point baskets, and missed some crucial free throws. Nina Horner had a big night and finished with a double-double. Horner scored 12 points for the Outlaws and pulled down 16 rebounds, seven of which came in the fourth quarter. Her 16 rebounds broke the previous school record of 14. “Nina demonstrated excel- lent rebounding technique the entire game, especially on the defensive end,” said Coach Casey Pallister. “It was the kind of leadership by exam- ple that I think really rubs off on other players.” Olivia Stewart also fin- ished the night with a dou- ble-double. Olivia scored 20 points, was eight-for-11 from the free-throw line, and she had 10 rebounds. “Olivia is always hungry Family-style Dinners Wed. thru Sun. at 6 p.m. Pre-set menu online Also serving breakfast & lunch Call for reservations 541-516-3030 www.lakecreeklodge.com Camp Sherman technique of ski racing very fast. She had a number of second-chance opportunities, and got to the foul line often because of that. She continues to be a strong force from the line for us. “This was a great experi- ence for our players,” said Pallister. “They experienced a lot of adversity and stayed together as a team, and that will serve us well down the road.” Three days earlier, the Outlaws were crushed 51-13 by North Marion at home in Sisters. The Outlaws struggled to handle the Huskies’ press from the beginning, and failed to keep their spac- ing and make solid passes. Numerous turnovers resulted, due to errant passing. On a bright note, the Outlaws were excited to welcome back senior guard Bethany Bachmeier, who has been out due to two ACL tears over the last two years. Pallister said, “I think the girls are still working on becoming confident with their offense, but they are improving step by step.” Sisters was to play at home against Douglas on Tuesday, January 12. On Friday, the Outlaws will play at home against Sutherlin in the first league game of the season. TIME FOR INSIDE PROJECTS Table Saw Wallpaper Steamer Carpet Cleaner NEED IT, RENT IT! 506 N.
