Forum on Facilities Needs at Sisters Schools The Sisters community is invited to learn about local school facilities needs and discuss solutions in a forum on Thursday, January 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sisters Middle School cafetorium (another forum is set for Monday, January 25 at Sisters Elementary School). Sisters School District staff and offi cials will lay out the needs faced by the district to repair, maintain, and update school facilities; take questions from the public; and solicit public opinion. Questions? Please call 541-549-8521. Sisters Shootout Tourney The Sisters Shootout is a premier youth basketball tournament for boys and girls grades 5-8 from all across Oregon. Presented by Sisters Park & Recreation District, it’s a great family event running Saturday & Sunday, January 16 & 17. Games are played at Sisters schools from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. both days. City Seeks Volunteer The City of Sisters is accepting applications for a volunteer (in-city or out-of-city) to serve on the Planning Commission (term expires June 2018). The commission reviews major land-use applications, advises the City Council on planning policies and more, and meets at 5:30 p.m. the third Thursday each month. Volunteer to Mentor Kids Central Oregon Partnerships for Youth (COPY), a program of the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Offi ce, is offering a six-hour orientation class on Saturday, January 16 to prepare volunteers to become mentors for children with an incarcerated parent. After training, mentors are matched with children in Sisters who share interests, and are asked to spend a few hours a week together with their child for a minimum of one year. Alateen in Sisters Alateen meetings take place at 7 p.m. every Thursday at The Episcopal Church of the Transfi guration. These meetings are for teens affected by the alcohol or substance abuse of someone in their life, to be able talk with other teens in a safe and confi dential setting. Tank can be a little nervous in new situations and may take some time to warm up; but just give this boy a chance and he’ll be your new best friend!
