Wednesday, December 9, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Wild, tasteful women headed to library By Sue Stafford Correspondent For the month of December, the walls of the Sisters Library community and computer rooms are alive with auda- cious, exuberant “Wild Tasteful Women,” as depicted in the popular art of Sisters resident Jill Haney Neal. Her art exaggerates the feminine to celebrate the uni- versal spirit of women that transcends their cultural and ethnic backgrounds. “I want to capture that spirit to empower and celebrate joyfully the whole woman,” Haney explained. The joie de vivre of Haney’s creations is evident in the artist herself and her entrepreneurial endeavors. The popularity of her ladies has led her to design a complete line of ceramic giftware, as well as create her own greeting-card line. Wild Tasteful Women have traveled far from Sisters, having recently been licensed for greeting cards in Russia. Wineries have chosen to label special vintages with the ladies, such as Menopause Merlot and Vivacious Vicky, which has sold more than 500,000 bottles of wine nationwide. In addition to her Wild See NEAL on page 31 photo by Sue anderSon the Sisters high Desert Chorale will be performing in full voice Friday, December 18 and Sunday, December 20. Singing of Christmas in Sisters By Jim Anderson Program has matching grant opportunity The Sisters Park & Recreation District Community Schools initiative, which provides after-school care at Sisters Elementary School (SES), has a match- ing grant opportunity. The local program has an opportu- nity through the Ford Family Foundation (via the Oregon Community Foundation) to match up to $10,000 to sup- port this enrichment program. The Community Schools Program provides free super- vised homework help, snack time, and enrichment oppor- tunities for grades kindergar- ten through fourth. Over 90 students, which represents just under 30% of the student population at SES, take part in the program throughout the school year. Enrichment opportunities are provided (for an additional fee) after the homework time. Additional activities include rocket class, Lego® build days, arts and crafts, and library days. See GRANt on page 21 Correspondent For the past eight years, retired mezzo soprano Irene Liden has been waving her hands directing the talents of the assorted sopranos, altos, tenors and basses who make up the 50+ voices of the Sisters High Desert Chorale — and they love it! Tenor Mel Miles began practicing with the Sisters Community Choir for its 1995 Christmas concert under the direction of Forrest Daniel, who had just retired as head of COCC’s vocal music studies. Looking back, he had this to say: “The earlier years of the Sisters choir consisted of about 18 members, and the choral program was offered as a credit class under COCC auspices. “Rehearsals and concerts took place at the Sisters (Episcopal) Church of The Transfiguration, and later on at the Sisters Mormon Church. Today, three or four of the original members con- tinue to sing in the Sisters High Desert Chorale, and oh, what fun we have.” Liden began directing the newly named Sisters High Desert Chorale in 2007, rehearsing Monday nights from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, and the Sisters Country residents have enjoyed the Christmas and spring concerts ever since. This holiday season’s per- formances will take place at Sisters Community Church, 1300 W. McKenzie Hwy., on Friday night, December 18, at 7 p.m., and another on Sunday afternoon, December 20, at 2:30 p.m. The chorale will, among several pieces of music, offer Ruth Elaine Schram’s “Shalom, Pacem, Peace,” sung in Latin, Hebrew and English. In addition to these three languages, another offering written by Alex Anderson and arranged by Jay Althouse, “Mele Kalikimaka” a Hawaiian Christmas greeting, will be sung in English and Polynesian languages.
