Locust Street and on Desperado via Buckaroo Trail. They are asking that the City of Sisters website be revised to include detailed instructions to campers for accessing the park from either direction. They have also recommended better sig- nage on the highway for both entrances, which is regulated by the Oregon Department of Transportation. Additionally, the PAB is recommending that the City review/revise the Transportation System Plan regarding possible changes at several intersections at the east end of town. Campers approaching from the east on Highway 20 will be encouraged to turn left onto Buckaroo Trail and then right onto Desperado. Those com- ing from the west on Highway 20 will be directed to turn right on S. Locust. Those traveling from the east on Highway 126 See PArK on page 29 Sisters Folk Festival passes to go on sale The Sisters Folk Festival is only two months gone, but the organization is already gearing up for next fall’s event. Passes for the 2016 festi- val, and registration for the Americana Song Academy, will go on sale at 9 a.m., November 16. The festival will run September 9-11, and the Americana Song Academy September 6-9, 2016. Passes and song academy registra- tion will be available online and through the festival office. After four consecutive sell-out years, organizers have decided to make avail- able 500 early-bird, all-event passes. Last year they were gone in 10 hours. Reaching from Sisters to Uganda By Katy Yoder Correspondent It’s not often a woman from Sisters receives an invi- tation to meet with members of Parliament, let alone the President and first lady of an African nation. Last year, Janet Storton got that call from Uganda. Leading up to the trip, Storton had one thing on her mind: planning the meetings to discuss a life- changing topic dear to her heart. It turned out that this jour- ney would face greater obsta- cles and have implications far different than any previous one. Since 2007, when Storton first traveled to Uganda, her passion and influence has helped the village of Kapchorwa blossom. On her first trip, she brought two quilts for the children she and her husband, Peter, sponsored. The women had never seen anything like it, and they asked Janet to teach them how to create their own “blankets of color.” Her once-in-a-lifetime trip soon turned into a life-long pas- sion to help the women attain economic stability and skills they could share with others. Storton began by teaching the local women how to sew, delivering sewing machines and later helping them start their own catering business, learning new cooking skills and better hygiene. The women named themselves “Sisters of the Heart” and adopted the motto, “Women Empowering Women.” With the new tools and knowledge, they began to lift themselves out of poverty. On one of her trips, Storton heard about the plight of young women who needed a different kind of help. That’s where her plan to provide a haven for girls who have been trafficked in the sex trade or were unable to get an education began, and the reason the Ugandan leaders wanted to talk to her. Storton’s proposal included housing the girls and teaching them skills and a sustainable way out.
