Wednesday, October 28, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Students learn science by crafting solar ovens By Rongi Yost Correspondent Science is a big part of the curriculum at Sisters Elementary School, where students in Clay Warburton’s, Katie Parsons’, and Julie Holden’s classes got to be involved in a fun, hands-on experiment. Students brought supplies from home and constructed their solar ovens during class- time. They had three days to complete the project, and then they had a cook-off. The science project is designed to teach the kids about scientific inquiry. They See SOLaR OVENS on page 29 Volunteers still needed to work on projects The City of Sisters is still looking for folks to apply for the Community Assets Technical Advisory Committee. The TAC will work on two project concepts identi- fied by the Community Assets Committee as feasible. The two projects are a Field House and a Combination Project that would include a conven- tion center with winter sports park and elements of an arts/ science/history building. The committee’s work will include creating architectural designs, elevations, determin- ing operational budget and reviewing financing options. Tasks will include preliminary design and cost analysis, solic- iting rough bids and research- ing relevant financing options. Individuals skilled in busi- ness development, design and architecture, and financ- ing are encouraged to apply. So far, only one applicant has expressed interest. The City will accept appli- cations from people residing both inside and outside city limits and the mayor, with Council concurrence, will appoint a minimum of five committee members. Meeting times and frequency will be determined by committee members. Applications can be picked up at the reception desk at City Hall located at 520 E. Cascade Ave. or on the City’s website at www.ci.sisters.or.us under the City Committees page. Submit applications by November 27. Sisters man is a Hall-of-Famer By Jim Cornelius News Editor Ross Kennedy was inducted into the Southern Oregon University sports hall of fame last weekend. A standout track-and-field athlete in the mid-1990s, Kennedy is now a real estate agent and family man in Sisters. He says he still ben- efits from the dedication and discipline he learned as a col- lege athlete. “It taught me to goal-set and go after my goals and my dreams, and I do that today,” he said. “I plan out my goals and work diligently to accom- plish them.” As a Southern Oregon University Raider 1994-97, Kennedy was one of five Raiders to record a pair of top-two finishes in the NAIA Outdoor Championships. His school-record score in the decathlon of 7,418 points was second in 1997 and would have been good for a NAIA championship in all but one other year since 1996. He was a four-time Cascade Conference champion, win- ning three straight decath- lon titles and one in the jav- elin, and he ranks high in the record books in high jump and broad jump. “It was the first time I’d ever focused that intently on perfecting my sport,” Kennedy said.
