Wednesday, October 7, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Edgar Allan Poe plays The Belfry America’s master of mania and the macabre — and origi- nal literary bad boy — is alive again and is primed to thrill and intrigue audiences. The year is 1848 and Edgar Allan Poe, author of “The Raven,” “The Tell-Tale Heart,” and “The Premature Burial” is touring the coun- try giving recitations of some of his most beloved tales and poems — that is, if he can keep his own horrors and demons in check long enough. Join Edgar Allan Poe at The Belfry on October 13 for an evening of fun, thrills, and poetry as he performs the sto- ries and poems that have made him a true literary immortal. Mad men, murderers, black cats, and, of course, the raven are sure to be on the menu. The evening of dinner the- ater is built around a commu- nity meal. The event is sched- uled to run 6 to 8:30 p.m. “It’s pretty exciting. We’re going to serve family-style dishes and the performance piece with dessert,” said Angeline Rhett, the hostess of the evening. Oregon actor Alastair Morley Jaques has appeared on stages all along the West Coast in the character of Edgar See poe dinner on page 25 Harvest Faire set to roll in new venue One of Sisters’ longest-run- ning events has a new home. The Sisters Harvest Faire is set for Saturday and Sunday, October 10-11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. The event will be located on Main Avenue, one block north of Cascade Avenue. The location includes Fir Street Park, offers plenty of parking and the same extensive and unique shop- ping that makes this event a tradition. More than 175 juried arti- san vendors will be present selling quality handcrafted items including pottery, metal art, photography, painting, jewelry, clothing, furniture, home décor, specialty foods and much more. The event is sponsored and staged by the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce. For years people from all over Oregon and the Northwest have converged on Sisters to celebrate the chang- ing of the seasons with this festival of handmade artisan goods and food. The annual Harvest Faire boasts hands- on activities, educational opportunities, great food, and good old-fashioned fun not See harvest faire on page 29 photo by Jeff Omodt Front row: Tom Worcester, Marcea DeGregorio, Suzy Ramsey, Shirley Lalli, Suzanne Carvlin and Dave Cox. Kiwanis elects new officers The Sisters Kiwanis Club installed a new president and slate of officers on September 27. Suzanne Carvlin assumes the president’s role for the next year. “It is an honor to lead the Sisters Kiwanis club and its 75 members,” Carvlin said. “Our club has been a driving force for good in our com- munity for 36 years. One of my main goals is continuing work focused on our club mission: to support our com- munity with an emphasis on children and youth. I’m proud to belong to a group that embraces both men and women who serve our com- munity. It’s noteworthy that Kiwanis International just elected the first female presi- dent, ever, of a global service organization.” Jan Failing was honored as Kiwanian of the Year for her five years as club secre- tary, her work in the dental van and countless volunteer hours on many club services and projects. 2015 is the 100th birthday of Kiwanis International and, to help celebrate, Kiwanis created the Centennial Award, which honors members with commitment and service to the Kiwanis mission. Tom Worcester was honored with a Centennial Award for his 25 years of extraordinary service to Sisters Kiwanis. Shirley Lalli was hon- ored with a Walter Zeller Fellowship awarded by Kiwanis International to members who served The Eliminate Project with dis- tinction. Eliminate is an inter- national effort by Kiwanis and UNICEF to “eliminate” maternal and neonatal tetanus worldwide. Kiwanis officers for the coming year include Carvlin, D o u g Wi l l i s , R o x a n n e Lenahan and Jack McGilvary. Members of Sisters Kiwanis contribute to the Sisters community in a vari- ety of ways. In the past year, the group: • Operated the Sisters Food Bank that distributed food to hundreds of people, with no paid staff. • At Christmas, the food bank gave food vouchers to 75+ families that allowed these families to have a tradi- tional Christmas dinner. • Sisters Kiwanis made a significant financial contribu- tion to The Eliminate Project. • Kiwanis donated funds See kiwanis on page 30 SISTERS AREA MEETING CALENDAR SAGE (Senior Activities, Gatherings & Enrichment) Wednesdays, 1 to ALANON Monday, noon, Shepherd 4 p.m. at SPRD. 541-549-2091. of the Hills Lutheran Church • Sisters Area Photography Club Central Oregon Fly Tyers Guild Wednesday, 6 p.m., The Episcopal 2nd Wednesday, 4 p.m., Sisters Library 4th Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For Church of the Transfi guration. community room. 541-549-6157. location information: 541-549-2072. 541-549-8737 or 541-549-1527.
