Wednesday, August 19, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y First day of school coming up fast The first day of school for 2015-16 is coming up so fast it might take parents by surprise. Things kick off when it still feels like summer vacation — on August 31. Sisters schools are now open for new-student registra- tion Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The first day of school for first- through ninth-graders is Monday, August 31. The rest of the high schoolers start on Tuesday, September 1. First day for kindergarten students will be Tuesday, September 8. Sisters Elementary School will host a “stop and drop,” Thursday, August 27, 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. This is an opportu- nity for students to bring their school supplies to their class- room prior to the beginning of school. Reinke, who has been on the job for a year, stated that the current radio system in use reached its “end of life” in 2010, and parts availabil- ity for the outdated system is low. A year ago Sparling Engineering, consulting on the possibility of replacing the old system, predicted a price tag for the infrastructure of $13 million. Reinke proposes working with the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) and the Oregon State Police to participate in a statewide radio system. By doing that the cost to the County for site mainte- nance, equipment, and elec- tronics would be reduced to $5-$6 million. At present, the Deschutes County 911 District has a $10-$11 million reserve for replacement of equip- ment. Six million of that can be devoted to the new radio system if the County partners with the State of Oregon. Deschutes County could conceivably serve as the first partner with the State. The County would be contributing See 911 on page 25 photo by Karen cammacK Kerani Mitchell, Brad tisdel, Debbie Newport and Kathy Deggendorfer in an oCf panel discussion. Foundation rendezvous in Sisters By Jim Cornelius News Editor Sisters is a model of com- munity engagement between the arts community, pub- lic agencies, nonprofits and schools. That made it a perfect site for an Oregon Community Foundation (OCF) rendezvous that car- ried the theme of “commu- nity engagement.” The rendezvous is a twice-a-year event conducted at one of the 18 sites that are implementing an innovative five-year OCF-funded proj- ect called Studio to Schools. Sisters Folk Festival (SFF) was awarded a Studio to Schools grant and is imple- menting the program in Sisters schools. A c c o r d i n g t o O C F, “Studio to School is a multi- year grant initiative support- ing 18 collaborative projects between schools and com- munity arts organizations to design and deliver sustain- able arts-education opportu- nities that have the potential for replication. Activities can occur both during the school day and in out-of-school time. Through this project, The Oregon Community Foundation aims to increase arts opportunities for under- served youth in grades K-8 and to support communities in strengthening their net- works and capacity to offer year-round arts education.” Last week’s rendezvous was headquartered at The Belfry, with groups scat- tering around Sisters to the many locations used by the Sisters Folk Festival as venues to take in different ways communities can make connections. “Sisters and what (is) going on there was always something we’d use to illus- trate what we’re trying to do,” said Michelle Boss Barba of OCF. It was a powerful experience. And one that set us up well as a community and also as an organization to do some pretty remarkable work. — Brad tisdel One of the speakers was Milenko Matanovic, who advocated for the importance of creating spaces where peo- ple can gather to engage with See Arts proJeCt on page 17 SISTERS AREA MEETING CALENDAR Central Oregon Fly Tyers Guild 4th Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For location information: 541-549-2072.
