Wednesday, August 12, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Sisters Folk Festival builds for the future Sisters Folk Festival (SFF) received three grant awards recently, all focused on provid- ing second-year funding for a re-alignment and expansion of staff for the organization. As the organization enters its third decade, it has been working on building the organizational infrastructure needed to pursue its wide range of work and move into the future. In 2014, SFF hired Ann Richardson as managing direc- tor, allowing Brad Tisdel, the former executive director, to assume the role of creative director, and focus his skills and attention on what he does best — managing the grow- ing presence of the Americana Project in the Sisters public schools and booking musi- cians for SFF events. Also in 2014 the organiza- tion created a new, nearly full- time position for a year-round volunteer coordinator. Board chair Jack McGowan is thrilled with the support. “With these much-needed and appreciated funding grants, the Sisters Folk Festival organiza- tion has taken large steps to solidify its stability and contin- ued service to the community.” SFF received a grant of $12,500 from the Irene Gerlinger Swindells Fund of The Oregon Community Foundation (OCF) for the See Folk FeStIVAl on page 22 photo by Gary Miller Diane goble, Dana Wand, and edie Jones are featured in a Bend library author program on Sunday. city of Sisters seeks council candidates For the third time in four months, the City of Sisters is seeking candidates for appointment to a vacant City Council seat. Correspondent Three members of the local Sisters authors group have had their books chosen to be part of the Love Your Local Author fair sponsored by the Deschutes Public Library System on Sunday, August 16, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Brooks Room at the downtown Bend Library. The monthly program, a celebration of Northwest writers and the written word, gives Central Oregon writers a chance to share their work with the public, and allows the public the opportunity to meet and speak with local authors and explore their work. The Sisters authors’ books run the gamut from children’s books to a parent- ing book, to an end-of-life workbook. Edie Jones will be showcasing her “Raising Kids With Love, Honor and Respect: Recipes for Success.” Jones describes her book as “the manual kids don’t come with.” It is full of down-to-earth, basic ideas to rely on over and over while caring for children; your own or someone else’s. This guidebook is organized so the reader can use the most appropriate section at any given time, covering years from birth to the young teens. Jones’s knowledge on the subject comes from 48 years of experience working with children and families, both personally and profes- sionally. She retired in 2013 from her position as direc- tor of Together For Children, where she served in a variety of capacities for 21 years. Her book is written to help parents, grandparents, teach- ers and childcare provid- ers work effectively, confi- dently, and lovingly with the See AuthoRS on page 22 SISTERS AREA MEETING CALENDAR Central Oregon Fly Tyers Guild 4th Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For location information: 541-549-2072.
