Wednesday, July 29, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Every dog has his day in ‘Doggie Dash’ By Sue Stafford Correspondent Every dog’s gotta have his day, and here in Sisters that day is Saturday, August 15, at Village Green Park, south of downtown. Bring your pooch to the fourth annual Doggie Dash/ Stroll and Fest from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with on-site registra- tion beginning at 8 a.m. Everyone’s invited to come, with or without a dog, to mingle with dogs and their humans, participate in the 5K run/walk or two-mile stroll, and enter your dog or simply watch the five fun contests scheduled for the canines: Best Trick; Best Look-a-Like; Best Hair; Best Howl; and a K-9 pie-eating contest. There will be prizes for all events, including Doggie Dash Hydro Flasks, a hand- painted portrait of your dog, assorted dog-related equip- ment from Ruffwear, a bike tune-up from Blazin Saddles and many more. The board will send a letter of support for the path to Alan Unger, Deschutes County commissioner, with a recom- mendation that the U.S. Forest Service conduct a new envi- ronmental assessment for the proposed path. Commissioner Unger has requested letters from individuals and organizations in order to determine if there is enough community sup- port for the Forest Service to schedule an environmental assessment in its next budget- ary cycle. Should this happen the Forest Service will actively solicit feedback from affected communities. In September of 2014, the Ranch board had voted to philosophically support the trail project after reviewing the results of a survey of hom- eowners. In response to survey questions, 61 percent of hom- eowners indicated support for the trail, 14 percent were unde- cided, and 25 percent were See BBr Board on page 22 photo by kathryn Godsiff Kanoe Godby driving Freedom at Clay maier’s driving clinic last weekend. Maier returns to Sisters for clinic By Kathryn Godsiff Correspondent Former Sisters resident and carriage-horse trainer extraor- dinaire Clay Maier was in Sis- ters Country recently to con- duct a carriage-driving clinic at the Indian Ford property of Kanoe Godby. Participants from several western states turned up with their horses and carriages to tap into Mai- er’s wealth of experience. Maier trained the Knapp Friesians a few miles down Indian Ford Road for 15 years, traveling across the country to carriage-horse shows in the early 1990s and later wow- ing crowds with the Friesians Spectacular, an entertainment act that saw him riding one of the majestic horses while driving the other one on long lines. Maier and the Knapp Friesian geldings performed at major equine events on both coasts and were the entertain- ment at Sisters Rodeo on two occasions. In 2007, Maier relocated to the Kentucky Horse Park when the Knapp family downsized the horse operation. His role at the Kentucky Horse Park, a destination for horse-lovers of all breeds and disciplines, was to coordi- nate the equine entertainment aspects of some of the various exhibits. The pinnacle of that experience occurred in 2010, when the World Equestrian Games were held at the Ken- tucky Horse Park. It was the first time the games had been staged outside of Europe. Maier was tasked with devel- oping the equine portion of the glittery opening ceremony. One hot afternoon during a rehearsal, he heard a refined British voice asking to speak with him. The gentleman was a representative of Her Maj- esty, Queen Elizabeth, and was inquiring as to Maier’s availability to participate in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, due to be held in May 2012. The Windsor Horse Show at Windsor Cas- tle would be the venue for an equine extravaganza, and they wanted a Western-themed presentation from the United States. Maier agreed and a contin- gent of cowboys, Texas long- horn cattle, trick ropers, stage- coach drivers, Pony Express riders and Native Americans represented America in one of the largest equine events in British history. More than 500 horses and 1,100 per- formers entertained the public See TraINer on page 22 SISTERS AREA MEETING CALENDAR Central Oregon Fly Tyers Guild 4th Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For location information: 541-549-2072.
