Wednesday, July 22, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Harvest Faire will move to Main Avenue Organizers of one of Sisters’ longest-running events are changing its location. The Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce has announced that the 2015 Sisters Harvest Faire will be held on Main Avenue between Elm and Larch Streets. This year’s event will be held October 10 and 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The new location will be adjacent to the new Fir Street Park and provide increased access for vendors and visi- tors. The new venue will ben- efit vendors by allowing them to set up one hour earlier, there will be more corner loca- tions, and increased vendor parking. Visitors and local event attendees will benefit with increased visibility and ease of access to Fir Street Park. Local musicians will ben- efit from the new stage, and the food vendors will now have space that makes them feel more connected to the event. “The Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce has been host- ing the popular Harvest Faire for over 30 years,” said Judy Trego, executive director of See HArVeSt fAIre on page 21 photo by diane Goble Sisters turned out to celebrate the new community Garden facility last week. Garden celebration marks milestone By Diane Goble Scratchboard artist featured in ‘Dog Show’ By Jodi Schneider McNamee Correspondent Artist Jennifer Hartwig’s first introduction to scratch- board art was in a high school class using scratch-paper. Life intervened and she didn’t pick up the medium again until 12 years ago. Hartwig, a Sisters resident, is now a scratch- board artist specializing in wildlife and pet portraits, and will be a featured artist in the seventh annual celebration of “The Dog Show: A Fetching Display of Canine Imagery.” An artists reception, including Hartwig, will be held at Sisters Art Works on Friday, July 24, from 4 to 7 p.m. Sisters Art Works will host The Dog Show from July 24 through September 24 at 204 W. Adams Ave. Scratchboard art is a form of direct engraving. Pictures are created using a sharp scribing tool. The panel starts out solid black, and then the artist scratches to expose a layer of white clay under black ink. “I use pressboard, and on that is baked ceramic and then the ceramic is sprayed over with India ink. The ceramic creates the white which has a See ArtISt on page 20 Correspondent The members of Sisters Community Garden hosted a garden party last week to rec- ognize all the people and busi- nesses that have contributed to the success of this commu- nity project. As honored guests mean- dered through the organic lab- yrinth located just southeast of the Sisters Airport runway, garden advisor Donna Parker took visitors new to the gar- den on a tour through the 44 planting beds showing off the variety of fruits and veg- etables planted by community members, including children, with enough left over to be able to donate about 300 pounds of fresh produce to the local food banks every year. In the background, against a threatening stormy sky that spared the garden and moved on just in time for the guests to start arriving, played The Anvil Blasters, a Western Americana band, with Jim Cornelius, Lynn Woodward, Jeff Wester and Mike Biggers. Garden manager Marvin Benson told guests the story of the greenhouse — taking it from a dream to reality, and what a benefit it is to grow- ing starter and vine plants that can’t take our Central Oregon weather extremes or our shorter growing season. Ruthie Douglas and her tireless volunteers had the garden all dressed up with tables and chairs scattered throughout the garden. There was a colorful tablecloth and a vase of flowers on every table, and a delicious buf- fet spread with foods made from local produce and deli- cious strawberry-rhubarb pie baked by gardeners made for a fun evening of good food, good company and good entertainment. “This garden embodies the spirit of the community,” Douglas said. “It was built by the generosity of the Sisters community— that is what we are recognizing this evening. I believe all this calls for a celebration!” Community Garden vice-president Bob Lawton stopped the music to begin the program and asked one of the original members, Sue Stafford, to give a little of the history since it began in 2006. (See related story, page 13.) Champagne was passed around, and Lawton asked all to raise their glasses in toast to Marvin Benson for all the work he has done in bring- ing this community together. Lawton then recognized some of the many people who See GArDeN on page 14 SISTERS AREA MEETING CALENDAR Central Oregon Fly Tyers Guild 4th Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For location information: 541-549-2072.
