Fire on west side threw up smoke over Sisters Despite hot and dry con- ditions, firefighters got a handle on the Marion Fire, located three-quarters of mile south of Marion Lake in the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness. The fire threw up an impressive column of smoke on Saturday, visible through- out Sisters Country. The fire was estimated on Monday to be 120 acres, with a patchwork of burned and unburned areas. An array of firefighting resources including rapel- lers, two hotshot crews, three handcrews, fallers, and three large helicopters were work- ing in tandem to cool hot spots near the fire’s perimeter and construct handline during the weekend. “We’re using light-on-the- land tactics to suppress this wilderness fire,” said Grady McMahan, district ranger for the Detroit Ranger District on Sunday. “The close proximity of Marion Lake has made it easy to do bucket drops and pump water directly to the fire, greatly moderating fire activity.” Smoke over the mountains always makes folks in Sisters nervous, as more than a decade of fires have ravaged — Last Week’s Puzzle Solved — the area. This one, however seemed to be poised to do little harm — and it created conditions for some spectacu- lar evening skies. Area and trail closures remain in effect for a por- tion of the Mount Jefferson Wilderness. The closure encompasses Marion Lake, the area west of Minto Pass Trail and Bowerman Lake Trail, north of Blue Lake, and east of Turpentine Trail. The Pacific Crest Trail #2000 and Turpentine Trail #3490 remain open. We’re using light-on-the- land tactics to suppress this wilderness fire. — Grady McMahan Visitors are asked to use caution when traveling on Highway 22 in the Marion Forks area due to increased fire traffic, and to respect the temporary flight restric- tion that has been established around the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
