Wednesday, May 20, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Red Cross urges blood donations Coffee kiosk reopens in new spot The American Red Cross urges donors to donate blood or platelets during the “100 days of summer. 100 days of hope.” campaign, sponsored by Suburban Propane. “Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer and vacation season, and the start of a seasonal decline in blood and platelet donations,” said Jared Schultzman, com- munications manager, Pacific Northwest Blood Services Region. “By choosing a day to give blood or platelets, volun- teer donors can give hope and help maintain a sufficient sup- ply for patients in need.” To encourage donations around the Memorial Day holiday, those who come to give blood or platelets from May 23-25 will receive a Red Cross RuMe tote bag, while supplies last. Summer vacations and travel can contribute to less availability for people to give blood or platelets. In a spring survey of Red Cross blood and platelet donors, nearly 90 percent indicated plans to take vacations this summer. How- ever, patients don’t get a sum- mer holiday or vacation from needing lifesaving blood. The Red Cross relies on volunteer donors for the 15,000 blood donations needed every day to support patients at about 2,600 hospitals and transfu- sion centers nationwide. The owner, Tiffany Adrian, at the end of her first week said, “We had a great turnout and our grand open- ing was quite successful.” This kiosk on wheels had been parked in the precarious traffic lane off Highway 20 in front of the Shell station. Cars occasionally rammed the structure, so a better loca- tion would have been desir- ous, but the kiosk was there when she bought the business in March 2014. A few months later, the owner decided to tear down the Shell station, dig up the fuel tanks, and put the one- acre property up for sale; so the kiosk had to go. Adrian was told in August that she had until October 31 to tow it away. The winds of fortune shifted in her favor when the new owners of Three Wind Shopping Plaza (Dickerhoof Properties, Penn St. LLC) asked if she would be inter- ested in putting her kiosk on the property between Takoda’s and Highway 20. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identi- fication are required at check- in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
