Wednesday, March 25, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Sisters company staff helps horse charity By Jodi Schneider McNamee Correspondent When Kate Beardsley, exec- utive director for Mustangs to the Rescue (MTTR), needed help with assembling a cou- ple of shelters for the horses, Lena Fornalski, a volunteer crew member at MTTR asked her son Nick, a draftsman for ENERGYneering Solutions, Inc. (ESI), for help. “My mom Lena asked me if this was something I could possibly do to help out, and since it looked like it was defi- nitely more than a one-man job, I asked a couple of guys where I work at ESI, and they jumped at the opportunity to help out and I really appreci- ated it,” said Fornalski. Three staff members from ENERGYneering Solutions are reassembling two shelters that were donated to the pro- gram. They are volunteering their time to put up the walls and the roof. The two other staff members helping are Paul Wilson, an electrical engineer who has been with ESI for nearly three years, and Daniel Cowan, a mechanical engineer in his first year at the company. “It’s just a team effort,” said Fornalski. Local residents show support for cat rescue By Jodi Schneider McNamee Correspondent Almost five years ago Sisters resident Pam Creason, Sisters Mercantile manager for 29 years before it closed in 2013, decided to adopt a kit- ten after her beloved Siamese cat passed away. She placed a call to Cat Rescue Adoption & Foster Team (CRAFT) in Bend. “I remember seeing their little donation jars around town, so I called CRAFT and spoke with Janice Sershen, a volunteer there. I told her that I was looking for a Siamese, and she said she would call me if they got one that fit what I was looking for,” Creason said. “Janice called me back not long after that, right when I was getting ready to go on vacation. But I went out to Craft off of Tumalo Road near Bend, and it was love at first sight after looking at a gor- geous Siamese kitten that they had.” While working at Sisters Mercantile, Creason remem- bers caring for a stray neu- tered cat for 10 years. He lin- gered around outside of the store and was named Rodeo. “The reason folks named See CrAFt on page 30 Habitat refurbishes home for Ortegas By Jim Cornelius News Editor “This is where we turn a house into a home, which makes it very special.” So said Nan Daschel of Sisters Habitat for Humanity as she kicked off the dedica- tion of the new home of the Ortega family of Sisters last Wednesday. The Ortegas — Abel, Fermina, Anayancin, Jenifer and Zenas — are the 55th family to purchase a home as a partner of the Sisters chap- ter of the international home- building organization. The Oretega’s home, where Main Avenue meets Locust Street, has a unique history, as described by Habitat Executive Director Sharlene Weed. It was origi- nally built in the 1970s in Deschutes River Ranch near Tumalo, and was moved to Sisters in 2002 and refur- bished for a habitat home. When the Orlandos family moved on, they had $30,000 in equity from the home. The house was then refurbished again by Habitat volunteers led by construction manager Shawn O’Hern, and prepared for the Ortega family. “This is a very well- used, well-loved, recycled … house,” Weed said. “It’s a very win-win-win situation.” Family partner Rick Slavkovsky presented the Ortega family with the traditional Bible as a house-warming gift, offering a kind word for each member of the family. Co-family part- ner Margaret Doke offered symbolic gifts of bread (plenty); a candle (St. Joseph, patron saint of home and fam- ily); honey (sweetness of life); wine (joy); and coins (good fortune). “It’s been a pleasure work- ing with you, and I wish you many happy years in your new home,” she said. The Ortegas were also pre- sented with an afghan hand- knitted by Habitat cabinet builder Ed Peterson of Gates. Father Jude Onogbosele blessed the house, and then the Ortegas gathered on the porch for the symbolic ribbon- cutting for their new home.
