GOVERNMENT CAMP
(AP) — Part of a historic
glacier cave has collapsed on
Mount Hood.
KGW-TV reports climber
Brent McGregor of Sisters
found the collapsed cave,
named Snow Dragon, at the
end of January.
McGregor and his climb-
ing partner first discovered
Snow Dragon and two other
glacier caves five years ago,
buried beneath the Sandy
Glacier on the northwest side
of the mountain.
He says the caves had
more than a hundred feet
of ice above them at that
time. McGregor thought it
would take 10 or more years
for the ice to melt. But last
year, he says, massive holes
started forming at the top of
the caves, leading to Snow
Dragon’s collapse. McGregor
says other caves will likely
meet the same fate soon.
He warns the melting ice
makes exploring the caves
dangerous.
TREATING SPORTS
INJURIES
Children & Adults
It was a bluebird day on
the mountain for the Oregon
School Ski Association
(OSSA) State Alpine
Championships last week-
end at Mt. Bachelor. Friday,
March 6 was the Giant Slalom
(GS) event, and Saturday,
March 7 was the Slalom (SL).
From the Outlaws team, three
boys and four girls qualified
to compete in the champion-
ship races.
In the boys division,
junior and first-year racer
Jake Sahlberg placed 27th in
the GS championships and
21st in the SL. Team captain
and senior Yasha Saldi placed
28th in GS, and 40th in SL.
Another first-year competi-
tor, freshman Lachlan Wood,
ranked 34th in GS and 30th
in SL . The boys team placed
fifth in both GS and SL team
standings.
On the girls team, senior
and team captain Emily
Ausman finished her high
school race career as the
highest placing Outlaw in the
state championships, placing
18th in SL, and 31st in GS.
Junior Cammi Benson fin-
ished 26th in GS, and 23rd in
the SL. Junior Betsy Ausman
finished 29th in GS, and 28th
in SL. The girls team was
fourth overall in SL, and fifth
overall in GS.
OSSA also awards sea-
son overall placing, which
combine the points earned
from races all season. Yasha

Saldi won 12th in GS sea-
son, 12th in SL season, and
12th in overall GS and SL
Combined. Cammi Benson
was 14th in GS season, and
15th in GS and SL combined.
Two additional awards
OSSA honors are the four-
year athlete awards and the
team spirit award. Seniors
Emily Ausman and Yasha
Saldi both received recog-
nition for competing on the
Alpine team all four years
of high school. And this year
the Outlaws team brought
home the prestigious Silver
Boot Award for best team
spirit.
“Team spirit is an integral
part of our team,” said Coach
Greg Ausman. “We have
great team camaraderie.
We cheer for each other on
the race course and help
each other during practice.
Sportsmanship is about being
humble when you win and
congratulating the winners
when you don’t. And the par-
ents of the Sisters kids vol-
unteer at the races more than
any other team in the league.
We may be the smallest team
in the league, but we have the
most team spirit.”
And the athletes think
so, too. The end-of-season
awards are a bittersweet
finale for the seniors who
