8 Wednesday, February 18, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Lady Outlaws best the Huskies By rongi yost Correspondent The Lady Outlaws started their week with a big 53-21 road win at Sweet Home on Tuesday, February 10. Three days later, Sisters suffered a 36-30 loss at Junction City (JC). Sisters registered a big win against the Huskies on Tuesday. The Outlaws took control of the game from the tip-off and Olivia Stewart was blazing-hot from the floor. Stewart was fouled on two inside buckets and con- verted both into three-point plays. The Huskies sat back in the key to take away the Outlaws’ post play, and Olivia got good looks from the top of the free-throw line and never missed. Stewart scored 10 of Sisters’ 14 first- quarter points. “I was very proud of the way the team adjusted to Olivia’s hot hand,” said Coach Julianne Horner. “They were patient, passed the ball, and waited for the top of the key to get open. When Olivia was unable to score, Ashley Smith was good for two put-back buckets.” Sisters added eight points in the second quarter and held the Huskies to just one basket. Stewart and Nina Horner were each able to hit a shot from behind the arc, and Olivia got a quick put- back bucket to bring the quar- ter to a close. At the half the Marga d r a it y a s! Tues Outlaws were on top 22-6. “I felt the defense was out- standing in the second quar- ter,” said Horner. “We did not commit fouls, we played strong, and we got good looks from the outside.” The Outlaws stayed the course in the third and didn’t let up. Smith did a great job and grabbed offensive rebounds and had three put- backs for six points. The offensive boards were key in the Outlaws’ 16 third-quarter points. In the final period, Stewart hit two big three-pointers, Horner scored five points, and Cassandra Arruda hit a deep two-pointer to seal the win. “Sweet Home did their homework and decided to take away our inside game and clog the key,” stated Horner. “The team adjusted to having Cierra (Mann) out sick, and Boston (Moore) and Bethany (Bachmeier) out with injuries. Each player worked hard, and due to everyone’s effort got a great win.” Stewart led the scoring effort with a double-double: a game-high 27 points and 10 rebounds. Smith scored 10 points and pulled down nine boards, and Horner tal- lied eight points and seven rebounds. Haylie Hudson added four points and 11 rebounds. In Friday’s match-up, the Outlaws were stifled by the Tigers in the first quarter of play and couldn’t get a bucket to drop through the net. JC put pressure all over the court and made it very difficult for the Outlaws to move the ball. At the close of the quarter Sisters trailed the Tigers 9-0. Sisters settled down in the second period and were able to outscore JC 13-9. Hudson went seven-for-eight from the line to highlight the quarter. At the half the Outlaws were down 20-13. The third quarter was a battle, and the Outlaws were only able to put up seven points. “We were working very hard defensively to keep JC limited to our one-shot rule, but we just could not get into our offense,” stated Horner. “We turned the ball over under pressure or could not get a second shot to get the bucket.” In the fourth, the Outlaws were able to cut the Tiger lead to three, but just could not get over the hump. “It was a difficult game to find any rhythm or stay com- posed,” said Horner. “I was proud of the girls for their fight all the way to the end. This team has shown great competitiveness and a ‘no die’ attitude.” Hudson led the team with 11 points, Arruda tallied six, and Smith added five. The Outlaws were to honor their seniors in their last home game of the season against Elmira on Tuesday, February 17. Sisters riders in the saddle for new season By Kathryn godsiff Correspondent The Sisters High School equestrian team is set to gal- lop into action in the first of three Oregon High School Equestrian Team (OHSET) Central Region meets. The action begins at 8 a.m. on Friday, February 20, at the Deschutes County Fair and Expo Center in Redmond. It concludes on Sunday after- noon, February 22. The free equestrian event covers an array of events test- ing the teamwork of horse and rider athletes. English and Western equitation, jumping, dressage, Western performance classes, gam- ing, cattle work, reining pat- terns, drill team, driving and working rancher are all on the schedule. The large variety of events gives riders and horses an opportunity to try disci- plines they don’t normally do, testing the partnerships and increasing skills. The team begins practicing in the depth of winter, which this year has had a differ- ent definition than most. The team members and the par- ents who haul their horses are grateful for the milder tem- peratures and ice-free roads thus far in the season. Parent advisor/coach Yvette Chandler said, “It looks like we’re going to hit the ground running for the 2015 OHSET season. Co-captains are senior Chawnie Craig and junior Ellie Chandler and we have a new coach, Lisa Allenbach. She comes from Summit High, where she helped coach their team for three years.” Chandler added that the team has strengths in all areas except drill team. This year the team of 10 will be competing in the large division, made up of teams of 10 or more riders. G e o g r a p h i c a l l y, t h e Central Region of OHSET spreads from Lakeview in the south, Hood River and the Dalles in the north, Sisters to the west and Pendleton in the east. The camaraderie and work ethic of the athletes and their support crews (usu- ally parents and family) make for a warm and happy atmo- sphere at the meets. Chandler added that the community can support the team in two ways — by donat- ing bottle receipts into an equestrian team box at Ray’s Food Place, and by turning up to the meets, cheering loudly and showing the Outlaw way.
