Wednesday, February 18, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y New staffers join Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show Tracy Alexander and Karen Koppel have joined the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show (SOQS) to help professionally manage the world’s largest outdoor quilt show — now in its 40th year. Tracy Alexander joins SOQS as the administrative manager, a part-time posi- tion. Alexander, who was born in Hawaii, worked on the Hawaiian Quilt Research Project and exhibition from 1994-96. She moved to Central Oregon more than a decade ago. From 1996-2005, Alexander served as Education and Family Program Specialist at the High Desert Museum, where she was responsible for all aspects of training and supervising a teen volunteer program, as well as develop- ing and implementing commu- nity partnerships with COCC, Bend Parks and Recreation District, and Deschutes Public Library. She also served as Art Station manager for Arts Central, managing the facil- ity, programming and staff of Art’s Central’s education out- reach program. She has lectured on and taught Hawaiian quilting. She lives with her family in Bend, See quILT SHoW on page 29 photo by Jerry baldoCk Sisters Science Fair returns to high school This Saturday, Sisters High School will turn into a giant science lab as the fourth annual Sisters Science Fair gets underway. The free, entertaining interactive fam- ily event runs from noon to 4 p.m. on February 21, at Sisters High School. The science fair features student projects from all three local schools as well as com- munity exhibitors, medical science, and environmen- tal and ecology experiments and displays. The Design, Construct, Compete (DCC) contest challenges contestants to build and run a Mouse Trap Car and it promises to fill the high school gym with roaring cheers. The event also fea- tures paper airplane contests and rocket launches. “The variety of experi- ments and displays from all three Sisters schools is a great reflection of the fantastic sci- ence in our schools,” said Cal Allen, director of the Sisters Science Fair. “Plus, we have community busi- nesses, universities and state- wide organizations displaying and explaining their prod- ucts and services. Chamber offices remodeled By Jim Cornelius News Editor The offices and visitors center of the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce are considerably brighter, airier and more welcoming in the wake of a remodel by the Chamber’s landlord — the City of Sisters. A public works crew ripped out carpet that had been in the building for at least 20 years, since the building housed the Sisters Library. “We tore out all the exist- ing carpet and there was a ton of floor plugs for the library. Gutted all those,” said pub- lic works director Paul Bertagna. Bertagna reported that the carpet was glued down like the installers meant business. It took four men to yank on it till it came up. New public works crew- member Gus Johnson led the installation of engineered hickory flooring. The building, which got an exterior paint job last year, got a new coat of interior paint and new lighting. The painting wasn’t in the original budget, Bertagna said, but was included when it became apparent that they could do it and still come in under the $19,000 budget fig- ure. The funds for the project came out of the City’s gen- eral fund. A second phase of the project is planned. Public works crews will open up the west wall of the facil- ity and install French doors to tie the building in with Fir Street Park. New deck and ADA ramps will also be constructed between the Chamber building and the old Maida Bailey building directly behind it. The Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce is located at 291 E.
