The Mail-Tribune reports that airline spokeswoman Jessica Wheeler says Flight 558 from Los Angeles landed safely. She says the flight was approaching the south- ern Oregon airport when the plane’s first officer was hit. Wheeler says the man was taken to a local physician to be cleared to fly. She did not know his condition. The newspaper says the plane had been scheduled for an 8:30 p.m. Thursday depar- ture for Las Vegas that had to be pushed back to Friday morning. Wheeler says the airline filed a report with local law enforcement and will cooper- ate with the Federal Aviation Administration and FBI “on any investigation they may do.” FBI Portland spokes- woman Beth Anne Steele said she couldn’t confirm whether the agency’s Medford agents would be taking part in the investigation. She says the agency “does have the ability to investigate laser strikes.” Specializing in Central Oregon Rural Properties K Kathy Hansbrough H Broker, CDPE, GRI, SRE B C Cell: 541-408-2998 Offi ce: 541-728-0033 O kjhansbrough@remax.net www.kathyhansbrough.com RE/MAX Key Properties 431 NW Franklin Ave. Bend, OR 97701 Licensed Broker in the State of Oregon 625 N. State law generally prohib- its people with drug convic- tions from getting a license to carry a concealed handgun. But Oregon reduced the sever- ity of marijuana possession charges in 1973, and has long allowed residents with one minor pot offense to obtain a license. That exception, however, did not apply to Oregonians who got caught with an iden- tical amount of marijuana in another state. Starting New Year’s Day, it will. It’s one of several incre- mental or otherwise low-pro- file laws going into effect this week. The most anticipated new law of 2015, marijuana legalization, takes effect in six months. The Oregon State Sheriffs’ Association pushed House Bill 4068, which was spon- sored by Rep. Kim Thatcher, R-Keizer, and Rep. David Gomberg, D-Otis, and over- whelmingly approved by the House and Senate. County sheriffs are responsible for issuing concealed handgun licenses, and the association said it wanted “across-the- board consistency” regarding marijuana convictions. “It’s just a matter of fair- ness,” Thatcher said. “Turn- ing people down where they wouldn’t have been turned down if the conviction hap- pened in Oregon doesn’t seem to make sense.” Nearly 200,000 Orego- nians had a concealed hand- gun license as of July. It’s unknown how many people have been thwarted from get- ting one because of a pot con- viction in another state. Kevin Starrett, director of the Oregon Firearms Fed- eration, helped write a simi- lar bill that was considered in the 2013 session but did not pass. He was pleased it was approved this year by a Democratic-controlled Sen- ate he considers “extremely anti-gun.” “I can’t tell you why things go the way they do,” he said. Gun control advocates did not see the need to change the law. Penny Okamoto, direc- tor of Ceasefire Oregon, said she’d like to see more train- ing for people with concealed handgun licenses. With marijuana becom- ing legal in a few months, Okamoto worries about the mixing of guns and drugs, whether it’s pot, alcohol, pre- scription medication or some- thing else. the news is rife with people intoxicated in some fashion making bad choices. — penny okamoto “The news is rife with peo- ple intoxicated in some fash- ion making bad choices,” she said.
