Justice of the Peace Webster yes terday fined the Salem Cannery Com pany $23 for working women in viola tion of the female labor law, which sets down that a woman must not work over ten hours a day. The canning com pany contended that the law passed by the last legislature providing for over time work for women prevailed in place of the former law. Justice Webster was of an adverse opinion, and accord ingly placed a fine against them. Those attending the Epworth League institute enjoyed a picnic and excursion to the Chemawa Indian school yester day, returning in the evening to the Methodist church, where Dr. Avison conducted a joint prayer meeting. The regular class work of the institute was held this morning, while the afternoon is being given over to the different sports, tennis, and probably a baseball game, if the parsons of the town can muster a nine. The evening service will be conducted by Dr. Youngson of the Rose City Park M. E. church of Port land, in the chapel on the campus. The meeting will begin at 7:30 instead of S o'clock as heretofore. Daniels, high official of the organization, from Mcdford, a bang-up time. From the time the visitor arrived until he left the lo cal order of Elks were at the bat all of the time. The members gave the ex alted antlered leader some excellent en tertainment in the afternoon. At 0:30 in the evening he was made the guest of honor at an elaborate banquet held in the Hotel Mnrion. A full attendance met Mr. Daniels in the lodge hall after the banquet, and he responded to the greeting with some woll chosen re marks.
