San Francisco, April 11. No loss a personage than "Billy" Muldoon he to whom tho wrestling game has been but a memory since the days of Clar ence Whistler, Tom Cannon and Matsa da Sorakiehi takos exception to the "toe hold," the fond embrace with which Champion Frank Gotch subdues ( the foreign strong men who descend upon this country occasionally. ' Muldoon says the toe hold should bo eliminated from the sport: that it is as ' much out of place in a wrestling bout as boxing gloves would be iu a golf tourney. According to Muldoon the toe hold is borrowed from jiu jitsu', the Japanese pastime, and it only differs from blood less surgery in the respect that the latter has for its purpose the curing of humanity, while the toe hold is employ ed to maim or cripple. , There are others beside Muldoon who J think that tho toe hold Bhould be .abandoned. But coming right down to lit there isn't a grip or lock used by the mat men that partakes oi tho na ture of a tender caress. Take tho hammerlock for instance. I wrestlers, but, like the toe hold, it threatens its victim with twisted liga i monts, and maybo wrenched bones, if an ! attempt is made to hold out against it. Gotch has made a specialty of the toe hold and that is why he is able to em I ploy it with such dire results. It is to him what the strangle hold was to Strangler Lewis twenty years ago. The strangle hold has been placed under the ban and when men like Muldoon begin to agitate against the too hold it is very likely to find its way into the dis card. Fltzslmnuns' Oome-Back. Jim Joffrios started it and now oth er veterans of the fighting gamo are falling in line. ' Bob Fitzsimmons has given out that he would like to come back "just once" and try his hand with some of the white hopes who at present Infest the game. He has expressed a preference for Lu ther McCarty. If the records Btato the case correctly, Fitzsimmons began his fistic career (back in New Zealand thirty-three years ' arm T t. in..4.. H ji id memj'-iuruu years Binco ne had his first match in this country and that, in itself, entitles tho Comishman to the long service medal. BobV first contest in America was with Billy McCarthy at tho California Athlotic Club in this city. If he boxes Luthor and makes it his farewell ap pearance he will have had a McCarty at each end of his string. Lord Lonsdale's Belt. Freddie Wchh, the British light I weight champion, has brought his Lord iLpnsdalo belt to this country with him. ' But only for exhibition purposes. His iLudship would never dream of counten ancing a contest in this country with that mado-in-England belt hung up as a trophy. There would be danger of Borne American lightweight annexing it and then it might bo as hard'to recover as the America cup. Frcddio has given out that he con GAME OF SENATORS AND PEN TEAM DUE SUNDAY A game between the Salem Senators and the state penitentiary toam will be played on the grounds at tho prison Sunday afternoon if satisfactory ar rangements can be made between tho managers of the teams today.
