Tho outlook for a good season of baseball in Salem in' good today, and there seems no good reason to beliovo that the city will fall short of phenom enal record of last season. Manager A. It. llakpr plans to start gotting the grounds in shape early next month. He is confident that tho toam will furnish tho fans with hettor baseball than dur ing last season and promises to spare no effort to givo them tho bust availa ble talent. Portland has sovoral semi professional teams and a number of them will be seen hero. Albany and other towns will send teams. Tho old grounds will bo used this year, but it is not known what arrange ments will be made for next season. Earl Baker, who pitched such a good season last year, will bo in Bhnpo to handle tho sphere. Ho has not "gone lack "and will bo in bottor shape than last year, it is boliovcd. Spring prac tice will begin soon. Captain Baker was very popular lis manager last year and tho fact that he will continue in that capacity stimu lates interest in tho national pastime here. After the town of St, Marys had pleaded with Fort Wayne to send boats and men to save its residents, imperiled in tho break of tho Grand reservoir, the police chief of St. Marys has just telephoned that tho residents of tho town have closed tho break in the reservoir, and now have the situation well in hand.
