ConVl St. Salem, Oregon Popular Opera at . the Grand TH,E CHOCOLATE 80LD1EK GEORGE BERNARD SHAW'S BEST AND GREATEST COMIC Ol'ER.V TO BE HERE NEXT MONDAY. Brimming with melody and efferves cent with the Batlrlc humor of George Bernard Shaw, "The Chocolate Sol dier" will come to delight local theatre-goers, wltk all the elaborate equipment of the splendid Whitney Opera Comlque orchestra on Monday, November 4, 1912, at the Grand opera house. Entirely an unknown quantity, this opera marched Into New York and won success for itself unequalled in the last two decades, and then entered Chicago, London, and compelled a greater praise than Chicago and Lon don critk , had ever before given a light opera. Not only is the melodious score by Oscar Strauss real music, overflowing with the appealing Bensu- ousnoss of the Viennese love music and whirling, gypsy-like marches that, if one may Judge by the fragments that have preceded Its coming, set the toes to tingling, and tho heart to beat ing, but the story contains delightful comedy, Its plot Is consistent, and plauslblo and the characters are hu man beings In an explainable way. "The Chocolate Soldier" has been eagerly seized by those optimistic critics who believe the "average man" Is more than ready to welcome true music, whether or not It may be "catchy" for no opera has been so an alytically praised by students of har mony, and yet has played to such tremendous audiences during Its sea son's stay In New York, Chicago and London, thereby Indicating its equal appeal to the seekers of more musical entertainment Viennese In tono. "The Chocolate Soldier" finds Its locale In the ro mantic Dragoman Pass of Bulgaria, and F. C. Whitney has brought all the quaint costuming, embroideries and martial glitter direct from that region. The company includes Vtena Vlvlcnne, lion Bergere, Lucille Saunders, Hazel Frazier. Charles rurcell, J. Russell Pcwell, J. F. MeDonough, Sylvan Lnnglols and Pony Moore. s A L E M ure to please the lovers of a wholesome beverage, Iways an invigorating, pure and delightful drink, ends strength to the weak and wearied physique, fleets a soothing cure for the nervous ills of life, akes life more pleasant and cheers the heavy heart. I feel I would like to express how much I appreciate the religious fea ture, viz: the Pastor BusBell sermons. When we attend the ordinary, nom inal churches now-a-days we llBten In the majority of cases, to a "moral secular lecture," rather than the "gospel." We do enjoy the plain, log ical way In which Pastor Russell pre sents the Bible to an Intelligent pub lic. We take pleasure In recommending your paper to our friends. We wish you success. Very truly, S. S. THACKER. MM It Bid ot Work. San Bernardino, Cal., Oct. 31. Snys Communities Should Decide for Themselves. Editor Journal: While, you are discussing various measures which should become luws, will you kindly take up the ndvocacy of bill No. 348, so that any city when It desires to do so, can become a part of any other Incorporated city without first appealing to the whole state to be permitted to do so, and provided that both cities can secure an affirmative vote In favor of such a proposition. There are several cities In Oregon which are desirous to be annexed one to the other, but the law prevents this unless a vote of the whole state Is first taken permitting this to be done. Strange as this may seem, it is a fact. A little over a year ago St. Johns voted "Yes" on the question of being annexed to Portland. But it after ward appeared that this was Inadmis sible, unconstitutional, nnd St. Johns now appeals to the wholo state to rec tify the wrong. They are now asking that this simple act of Justice shall be given them as well as lo other cities similarly circumstanced. Will you do it, and thereby earn the thanks of the good peoplo of St. Johns Yours respectfully, J. H. FLETCHER, The Difference Fundamental. The one thing that particularly dif ferentiates the Socialist party from the other parties is the ownership and management of general Industry. It does not matter that T. R. made up his platform largely from Socialist splinters; for upon tho fundamental point at Issue he Is on the other side. Ills scheme for the protection of the trusts originated with Gary at the head of the steel trust, and Is the boldest that has yet appeared. The chasm between socialism and bull mooslsm Is too wide for anyone to straddle. L. D. RATLIFF. Child Labor and Health. "Child labor predisposes to tuber culosis. This does not apply exclu sively to child labor In the factory. In many cuses child labor in tho homo Is ns bad as In the factory, and the dang er from tuberculosis Is Just as groat." "Tuberculosis Is a social disease In the final analysis. It can not bo eradicated until we have social juBtlce." Inquire About Son. A letter has been received by Mayor Lachmund from the mayor of Hunting ton, Oregon, concerning a young man whose parents reside there, and who are very solicitous for the welfare of their son. The letter follows: A. E. Simmons, of this city, left here some two or three years ago for Sa lem, Oregon, since which time no trace has been had of him. Ills parents are much distressed over his absence and are making every effort to locate him. I would bo glad to know whether he Is listed In your city directory or whether your police department has any trace of him.
