Where he contracted the disease Is just as much of a mystery as where the two clerks in the office of the state engineer, which adjoins the office of the Insurance commis sioner's office, contracted It several months ago. The office has been thoroughly fu migated, and it Is not believed that further cases will develop. ASSASSIN FIRES AT COLONEL. (Continued from rage 1.) The assassin was prevented from firing a second shot by Albert II. Mar tin, one of Colonel Roosevelt's two secretaries. Colonel Roosevelt had Just stepped Into an automobile when the assassin pushed his way through the drowd to the street and fired. Mar tin, who was standing n the car with the Colonel, leaped to the man's shoul ders and bore him to the ground. Captain A. O. Glrard, of Milwaukee, who was on the front seat, jumped almost at the same lime and in an in stant the man was overpowered and disarmed. A wild cry of "lynch him" went up from the crowd. Colonel Roosevelt spoke to the people and told them to spare the would-be assassin. The man was taken into the hotel and held there unlit he was removed to the police station. In spite of the entreaties of physi cians, Colonel Roosevelt Insisted upon delivering his address. "I will make tills speech or die, one or the other." Crowd Thrown Into Panic. Harry F. Cochems, one of the Wis consin Progressive leaders told the great crowd which had assembled In the auditorium that Colonel Roosevelt bad been shot and asked the people to be calm. The crowd was thrown al most' Into a panic by the announce' ment, but Colonel Roosevelt calmed them by rising and assuring them that he was not badly hurt. Then he be gan his address. Several tlmea he seemed to be growing weak, and mem bers of his party rose to help him. Ho motioned them to sit down. "Let me alone. I'm all right," he said. At 10:30 o'clock Colonel Roosevelt was sitting on the operating table talk ing politics with the physicians while they were awaiting the arrival of an X-ray machine. Colonel Roosevelt left the hospital at 11:25 p. m. He was able to walk unassisted. "I am feeling fine," he said. Shot Fired Sear Hotel. The shooting took place In the street in front of the Hotel Gllpatrick. Colo nel Roosevelt reached Milwaukee shortly after 5 o'clock, and making his way through the crowd at tho Btatlon, entered an automobile and was driven to the hotel. He took dinner In a pri vate dining room on the main floor with members of the party on his pri vate car. After dinner Colonel Roosevelt went to his room on the second floor of the hotel, and Bhortly before 8 o'clock he started for the auditorium. Crowd Cheers Colonel. With the Colonel were Philip Roose velt, a young cousin; Mr. Cochems, Mr. Martin and Captain Glrard. The crowd pressed closer about tho Colo nel and gave a cheer as he appeared. As the party reached the automobile Colonel Roosevelt's companions stood aside and he stepped into tho car. Martin entered directly behind him and sat on the further side of the car. Colonel Roosevelt stood up, waving his hat In answer to the cheers of the crowd. The assassin was standing in the crowd a few feet from the automo bile. He pushed his way to the side of the car and raising his gun, fired. Martin caught the flash of the re volver as the shot was fired and leap ed over the car a second after the bul led sped on its way. Colonel Roosevelt barely moved as the shot was fired. Athlete Fells Assassin. Before the crowd know what had happened Martin, who Is six feet tall, and a former football player, had land ed squarely on the assassin's shoul ders and had borne hlin to the ground. He threw his right arm about the man's neck with a death-like grip and i with the left arm seized tho hand that had held the revolver.' In another sec- ud he had disarmed him. Colonel Roosevelt stood calmly look ing on as though nothing had happen ed. Martin picked the man up as though he were a mere child and car ried, him the few feet which separated them from the car, almost to the side of the Colonel. "Here he Is," said Martin, "look at him Colonel." . All this happened within a few sec auds, and Colonel Roosevelt stood gaz ing rather curiously at the man who had attempted his life before the stun ned crowd realized what was going on. Then a howl of rage went up. "Lynch 111111!" Cries Crowd. 'Lynch him! Kill him!" cried 100 men. The crowd pressed in an them and Martin and Captain Girard, who had followed Martin over the sldo of the automobile, were caught with their prisoner in the midst of a strug gling throng of maddened men. It seemed for the moment that the assas sin would be torn to pieces by the Infuriated crowd, and it was Colonel Roosevelt himself who Interfered on behalf of the man. He raised his hand and motioned imperiously to the crowd to fall back. "Stop, stop." he cried; "stand back, don't hurt him." The crowd at first was not disposed to. heed his words, but at length fell back and permitted Martin and Cap tain Girard to carry the man Into the hotel. 'After a short struggle the as sassin gave up, and was carried with out resistance out of the reach of the crowd. Colonel Snys Shot Missed. "Are you hurt, colonel?" 100 vrtlces called out. ."Oh, no." he responded with a smile. ''Missed me that time. I'm not hurt u bit." "I think we had better be going on," he said to the other members of his party, "or we'll be late." No one In the party, Including Col onel Roosevelt himself, entertained the slightest notion that the colonel had been shot. Dr. Scurry Terrell, of Pallas, Tex., Colonel Roosevelt's physician, who had entered the automobllo Just before It started off, Insisted that tho colonel return to the hotel. He would not hear of it, and tho car was driven to the Aiultlmorlum. As booh as they reached the build ing Colonel Roosevelt was taken Into a dressing room, and his outer gar ments were removed.
