This the universal opinion of every body who has seen "Ilnby Mlno," the product of Margaret Mayo's pen, un der the direction of Wllllnm A. Brady, which will again bo Been here on Sat urday evening, Septomber 21 at the Gland. This Is Just the sort of a play to turn tears Into laughter, and to give life a rosy lino, so Bayeth ono of Fngland's most famous critics where "Daby Mlno" scored a whole year's run at Sir Charles Wyndhani's thaatre In London, and It should be borne In mind that over In London town they have heretofore held a strong preju dice against plays of American manu facture, bo this superlative praise In favor of "Daby Mine." Is all the more remarkable. "Daby Mlno" unlike many so-called fun plays, gets a hold of the funny bone of Its audience at the very outBct and proceeds to tickle It for two and one-half hours, not moderatoly, nor modestly, but boisterously and stren uously until the audience fairly shouts with glee. A young married couple are quarreling at the very boglnnlng of the performance. In a towering rage the young husband leaves the house, and remains away for three months, after which period the clever young wife makes up her mind that woman's Ingenuity should be sufficient to for mulato a scheme to bring back her wandorlng better half. The wife con sults a friend, who opines that, wlfo vlre the absent husband that he is the proud father of a lusty Infant, and the friend volunteers to hire a baby for the occasion. A child Is secured for the purpose, but the husband appears on the scene sooner than expected and even before the child Is brought Into the house. In the meantime the real mother of the baby Is seized with remorse and demands the child back. Again the friend ruBhes off to got an other baby, and It Is In the subsequent complications incident to the arrival and rescue of this child that the com' plications take on an amazingly amus ing aspect. The fun, once started, is kept up to the very end of the com' cdy with never a suggestion of a let up. Throughout the entire three acts the fun of "Daby Mine" Is of the clean, wholesome, cheerful sort, with never the least bit of suggestlveness to mar the enjoyment of the performance. LIGHT!' Pfi. 37 Oral Lm Street. lewYorl "Iff ' "AWAKENING OF HELENA RICHIE" AT THE GRAND LS PRONOUNCED THE PRE-EMI NENT ATTRACTION ON THE AM. LRIOAN STAGE TODAY-IT DE LIGHTS EVERYBODY. From Ernest Shuter: Itosolle Knott In "The Awakening of Helena Richie," one pf the pre-eminent attractions of the American stage today, will be this season's attraction at the Grand opera house Thursday, September 19th, tonight. , "The Awakening of Helena Richie" ran for one solid year In Now York, nine months at the Tremont theatre, in Boston, seven months at the Illinois theatre In Chicago and several months in Philadelphia, and this Is its third tour; and within a short time It will have extended engagements In Europe j and Australia, the same as it is now huvlng In our own United State "The Awakening of Helena Richie" Is a dis tinct novelty, Insofar as Its theme Is concerned. The plot was conceived and written by Margaret Deland, and dramatized by Charlotte Thompson, and It Is so brilliantly staged by Ro selle Knott that the production must be classed as magnlfcent. Even in these days of lavish expenditures, the settings are splendid. From the first to the last scene, the stage settings and environments are rich, colorful and artistic, and the light effects beautiful. To wrlto a play that will continue as a vehicle of popular en tertainment, throughout the vicissi tudes and changing public moods, Im plies that it contains some particular elements that enable It to make wide appeal to a vast number of people, though as a matter of fact, It does not necessarily follow that such a play Is a great piece of dramatic writing. On the contrary, the generally successful play In a majority of caBes lives for the simple reason that it roaches the hearts of the people, that great mass of Individuals who go to make the vast army .whose approval and patron age is what makes the modern drama an assured fact Such a play Is "The Awakening of Holena Richie" as play ed by Rosolle Knott, supported by Henry Hall, late star of Llebler's pro duction of "The Man From Home," You must, In the long run, give the public the sort of plays It wants and "The Awakening of Helena Richie" is ono of them. Such plays aro like rare Jewels difficult to got Intto one's pos session and then not always recog nizable to even the most Intelligent mind, until they havo boon examined under a strong light, which, In cases of plays, is to be found In public pre sentation. The public Is a merciless critic, Its palate is delicate and must be tickled with the sort of dramatic dish that will not clog nor leave an unp'easnnt taste behind.
