Mote Headquarters A change has been made in the management of tlie Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Co., by which It be comes necessary to change the loca tion of the district traffic agent from Salem to Eugene. C. F. Cole, w ho has had charge of that work here for the past year or more, left today over the Southern Pacific railroad for Eugene, where he will enter upon his duties In the larger field Immediately. Since coming to Salem Mr. Cole has mude many friends who are sorry to see him leave. A Quick Capture Patrolman Sam Rurkhart left for Portland at 11 o'clock this forenoon to bring back W. Walker, who is want ed here for the larceny of some cloth ing from the Florence hotel. The report of the stolen goods was given to the officers late last night and by nine o'clock this morning the culprit was under arrest In Portland. CHAPMAN IS A SPLENDID ENTERTAINER The only living white man who wit nessed the fall of General Custer on June 23, 1975, Is In Salera (or the first time In thirty-six years in the person of Alfred U Chapman, a guide who was captured by a squad of Indians, held as a prisoner for eighteen days, then made his escape, reaching the IdtiffB east of the battlefield just In time to witness the battle below. Ife crept down as close as possible to avoid detection by the Indians and viewed the fight through field glasses while less than a mile away from the scene of carnage. The noted visitor to the capital city Is lecturing and entertaining crowded houses at the Wexford theater tonight being his last appearance before n Salem audience. Mr. Chapman has with him a large medal given him by the theater man agers of Portland with the following engraved uion Its face: "Clayed be fore more Portland people than any Hvlng man." He Is about sixty-three years of age and claims that he is good for lots of work on the plat form yet. He is billed to appear In eighty playhouses between here and San Francisco. Mr. Chapman talks interestingly of ninny of Salem's old timers, and among the first he met upon reaching this city after an absence of thirty five years was the Rev. P. S. Knight with whom he was acquainted In the years past. The entertainer Is In apiiearance a typical plainsman and gives his audi ence a thrilling account of the famous massacre.
