Civilized? Hiive wo begun to be civilized? FARMER JONES. For Homo time now we luivo nil been Intermitted In tho articles In yoiu ' pplcii lid paper on this Kiilijcct. If you will allow a common fanner to havo a word, I will have my nay, be fori ;lio subject as well an the poor criminal la exhausted. Slnco we oil are more or less In the trlminnl class, wo naturally want to know what Is to become of us. Tho thing Hint Is douo now to tho poor fellow who Iiiih been gullly or suspect ed of seme crime, mny ho done to morrow to tho follow who advocates etnrlllzatloti and all those awful things wo nro bo coolly planning to do to our fellow man. It Is said that tho man who Invented thu guillotine loll tho keen edgo of the awful Instrument on his own quivering flesh. Ho th torture we might put upon tho un fort mute todny, mny be upon us to morrow. Wo are told that only the well bred and the good should take upon tbunselves tho parentage of children; that, they alone aro fit to propagate tho race If that were the case the raid race might not be prop agated, for there Is none good, In tho very beginning God allowed a murderer to live, marry, father chil dren, found cities nnd start tho race from which theso thoroughbreds cam?. It may be. however, Cod did not know. He had not had tho privilege of rend ing tho articles from your able writ ers. &r eln Ho did not agree with their Henliitienls. If all the criminals In the pin and out were suddenly dealt with as your writers lmllcat- business wuild bo paralyzed and the street.) 'ock somewhat deserted. Tho history of tho nu-o has shown, over and over again, that our greatest men pud wimmi have come' from hemes of Ignorance, poverty, and fro Cj'iinlly of a low moral atmosphere, "'lin great llamlllonlan sire, from which havo come the splendid trotters (,f the world, was a horse, of common, ferub ancestry. Ho was a freak nnd Co llttlo appreciated that he died of liegleet nnd starvation, Abraham Lin coln, U. S. Oriint, Thomas A. Kdlson, and tho writer wero all of humble birth, and no unci could havo expected such greatness from such a source. Children of great men are seldom nbovo tho averago; children of tho good are often bad. It looks as though nil great men have been freaks, accidents, unex pected. We havo done everything to the criminal except what wo would want him to do to us If tho thing were re versed. I wonder If tho criminal la not the natural offspring of condi tions which society Itself brings about. I wonder If they nre not our legitimate children nnd wo do not know our own. In the coming day will It not be a crime to foster conditions which Inevi tably produce criminals? Our boy, dearer to us than life; a manly little fellow, went from us at seven, Into the boasted, public schools as puro as tho sunbeam, and with hopes of coming greatness, lie re turned to us after ono short day with words upon his tender lips and thoughts In his young heart which we would nut have had Mm know for any thing. Where on earth can we send him where he will not b ruined? Our X-RAYS AND SMILES. The Freo Lunch won a decided vic tory In Lob Angeles. Tho city council passed an ordinance forbidding the serving of freo lunches In saloons, and Log Angeles rose as one mnn and Bent a petition to tho city council, to per mit tho freo lunch to live, to do what good It could. Tho petition was signed by 2G,r00 persons, which shows Borne folks nt least nre In favor of a free blto"or two nlong with what they buy. Taft'B position that n. presidential elector on the republican ticket must voto for tho man chosen by tho repub lican convention Is unassailable Ev ery man Is entitled to think nnd vote ns ho pleases, hut no man has a right to solicit votes as a candidate of one party, for tho purpose of thwarting the wishes of the people who elect him Republicans claim Taft will carry Oregon, This would not bo at all sur- prlslng. Indeed If ho does not carry Oregon, tho chances of his election will bo pretty slim, for Oregon Is nl woya solid In tho republican ranks on the presidential elections. Tho Pendleton Live Wire had a fit Wednesday becouso Oovomor West made tho remark In connection with the Alice Brown extradition cnse.when soifipone said she wns not a scarlet woman that sho was ''no Virgin Mary.1' Tt wns perhaps Inelegant, but the horse editor falls to see whoreln It Is so utterly blasphemous ns tho Llvo Wire Bcenis to think It. Tho governor's as sertion at lenst had tho merit of being absolutely true. DAMAGE BY THE STORM LARGELY OVER ESTIMATED This morning tho clouds broke away and tho sun peeped out as bright and cheerful as though he had not been sulking for three or four days, and the record-breaking storm of August Is no doubt over. It hns been general from tho Sbikl.vous to Alaska, nnd from the coast to Idaho. First reports Indicated much damage to crops, hay, grain, hops nnd fruit, or at least prunes, but like nil first reports theso are no doubt largely exaggerated. There hag been damage of course, but It Is not very gorlous. Somo hay and grata has been hurt, gome hops blown down, but the prunes wero not for enough nd vnnced to bo hurt. When tho returns aro nil In, Oregon will be found there with bumper crops of all kinds, nnd tho storm will mnke hut llttlo differ ence In the grnnd total. This of course If the wealher clerk spits on his hands and lets go, satisfied with breaking all August rain records. CHURCH SERVICES. United Evangelical. Cottage street, near Centtr; G. L.
