J. L. Bowman, proprietor ot the Brownsville Woolen Mill Stores (five of them) writes under date of June 3, as follows: "I am In receipt of your letter of the 31st ult, and also the editorial clipping which you sent of the "Made In Oregon" campaign has been read with Interest. I have been watching the advertising campaign that you are running in the various papers, show ing up Oregon manufactured goods and I am more than pleased with the way these have been showing up. I want to say here, Mr. Hofer, that I take my hat off to you as a booster and 1 believe you are doing a great work for the Introduction and sale ot Oregon goods. We are having an im mense sale of clothing manufactured from Oregon cloth and believe we are getting good results from the ad. we are carrying In the various papers ad vertising Oregon goods. "We want to thank you and tell you that we thoroughly appreciate the ef forts that you are putting forth." (Mr. Plowman will establish two more Made in Oregon Woolen Mill ' Stores this fall. Ed.) i The proprietor of the Brownsville' Woolen Mill Clothing store has shown his appreciation of the Made In Oregon ! campaign py presenting the editor of this paper with a fine mohair suit of clothes Just the thlnar fnr weather. There Is no finer article nf fabric for men or women than the Oregon mohair, made from the goats that browse on the hills of Old Web foot. Mr. Bowman Is the proprietor of five clothing stores in Oregon, and will this fall establish several more. He has made a demonstration that the Made In Oregon product is preferred by the people ot Oregon when brought to them in the right styles and prices. He Is one of the proprietors ot a clothing factory that makes up suits irom me prouuctB or three Oregon woolen mills. During the Rose carnival hundreds of western Oregon and eastern Oregon people visited Portland and many vis ited the great department stores in that city. On the Oregon Electric be tween West Park and Tenth streets is the great Olds, Wortman & King store, occupying an entire block. Many who were In the city the past week and wanted a comfortable place to rest with all modern conveniences called into this great establishment and rest ed, or left packages or got a dairy lunch or a fine mid-day meal. It Is in the heart of the city , and has the most courteous and accommodating em ployes. The various departments ot the store as you go through them are a sight in themselves. The manage ment made an announcement In this paper Inviting their friends and the general public to come In and make It their headquurtei'B during the Rose Show, and they hud hundreds of valley callers. The writer met Hon. Blnger Her mann, the old Oregon congressman and former commissioner of the gen eral land office, on his way to Wash ington. He was looking well and Is doing Important business with the de partments at the national capltol, where he seems to have the confidence of the governmental people as much as ever. He has one son, Hon. Schiller Hermann, doing a real estate business in the Rothschild building at Portland. He sells eastern Oregon landB In the older eastern states and does a fine Dullness. Anothe.- son, Elbert Her mann, Is a prominent attorney at Roseburg. On June 5th Hon. Phil Metschan, the genial landlord of the Imperial hotel, quietly celeorated the fiftieth anni versary of bis arrival In Oregon. In ifirt ne sailed from Bremen to New i York on a clipper ship, making the voyage In forty days. In 1862 he crossed the plains from the Missouri ' river to California, coming up to Ore-1 gon on the steamer Pacific. He land ed at Canyon City in 1863, was county treasurer from 1868 to 1872, county clerk from 1874 to 1878, county judge 1880 to 1884, county clerk from 1888 to 1890, and then state treasurer from 1891 to 1899. Mr. Metschan has his two sons in the hotel business with him, and as Shakespeare says is rich with honors, years, and troops of friends. The Made In Oregon idea Is the best guaranty of a friendly interest in the home manufacturer and the home mer chant The newspapers ot the state are getting a great deal of advertising for the home Industries and the home merchant ou account ot the Made in Oregon campaign. Under the heading "Made In Baker County," the Baker City Herald has the following over a page of advertising: 'Buying home products will create places for our boys and girls as well as every one who seeks advancement. Encouraging home Industry by conscientious pat ronage is a guarantee that our young people will not have to leave us to get a chance to live and succeed. Insist on home products when price and quality are equal. If our present local Industries succeed others will come here, Baker will be more prosperous, larger and wealthier. Read over the following advertisements carefully and realize who are the wealth producers of the county." STATE BUYS IN AUSTRIA INSTEAD OF IN OREGON H. T. Johnson, of the Portland Ele vator Company, manufacturers of pas senger and freight elevators, writes under date ot June 8th, as follows: "We take great pleasure In writing you this letter and thanking you for the interest you have taken in our welfare and in helping build up our business, together with the many other manufacturers In this state, through your Made in Oregon movement "While it is just a week since you called upon us and after you had ex plained your proposltnori, we cheerful ly gave you an advertisement to be published each week in ten different newspapers throughout the state, we have already noticed results through your efforts In getting 'In touch with prospective customers whom you have already Interested in Made In Oregon goods. "We beg to advise that we have re cently closed contracts tor the instal lation of one elevator for the Union Meat Co., at North Portland, which makes the fifth elevator which we have installed for this concern. In bids now being asked for the equipment ot a publio institution In Oregon, chairs made in Austria are specified. This fact was brought out at the "Oregon First" luncheon of the Ad Club today, held to foster the "Ore gon First" movement and encourage the use of Oregon products. Every article on the menu was raised or pro duced in Oregon, and the chairs and tables used were made in Portland. Colonel E. Hofer, chairman of the day, named a number of concrete Instances where the specification of Oregon made goods in publio contracts had brought much wealth to the state. A. J. Klngsley, president of the Ore gon Chair company, reviewed the de velopment of manufacturing In the state and addresses were made by A. HuckeBteln, a cigar-maker of Salem, and W. V. McKibben, of the AlberB Brothers Milling company. Charles A. Fraser, state purchasing agent, ex pressed the desire of the Btate officers to aid the home industry development, i i MADE IN OREGON IDEA IN THE STATE PRESS (From The Dalles Chronicle.) I You never can enrich your farm by putting the fertilizer on somebody else's land. You never can build np this community by sending your mon . ey somewhere else. The money you spend will build something somewhere; where, will de pend on whether you spend the money in some other town ochere. i (From the Hood River News.) i That poem that Colonel Hofer wrote about Hood River while at the Blos som Festival has Inspired envy among some ot the booster organizations of the state. The Roseburg Commercial Club Bulletin says: ''Colonel Hofer attended the Blossom Festival and the Hood River valley looked so good to him that it inspired him to write a beautiful llood River poem. The re ception committee here should see to It that the Colonel Is supplied bounti fully with strawberries and cream while vlBltlng the Strawberry carnival, as a Hofer poem would be quite an addition to our booster literature." (The Astoria Dally Budget.) The "Made in Oregon" campaign that Is being waged throughout the state Is a movement that is worthy ot the unqualified co-operation and up Dort of every loyal Oregonlan. Its ob' ject is to extend the home market of the various clasBes of articles tnat are manufactured in the state and to thus by giving them our patronage, grad ually build up industrial Oregon, until the state Is listed among the leading manufacturing commonwealths of the Union. At the present time many hundreds of thousands of dollars are sent away each year for articles, that ought by rights to be manufactured within the confines ot the state. One thing that we want is more factories, more industrial plants to manufacture our raw materials Into products ror tne market A splendid way to bring about the establishment of these additional factories is to patronize those which we have and thus show Intended In vestors that Oregonians are proud of their manufacturing enterprises and are willing to encourage them by using their products. (From the Condon Globe.) A Dortion ot our people seem disin clined to patronize the home merchant except when they can't help it. They will ask a grocer to deliver a yeast cake to their back door. But when it comeB to ordering a winter's supply of canned goods they write to some distant department store. It should be needleBS to say that If everyone dm we bought everytmng possime at home, our stores could keep even bet ter stock. It is a great convenience to be able to make selections from a good line ot goods at home. This be comes possible where every one loy ally supports the home merchants. Under such circumstances existing stores could do a larger business, em ploy more people, and new concerns would start. Every person owning real estate or a business here would see it grow more valuable. Even the man with nothing would gain. There would be more property to tax, hencei more public Improvements. With more money in circulation our fraternal so cieties, churches and clubs could serv the community more efficiently. BUILD UP INDUSTRIES BY BUYING THEIR PRODUCTS (Editorial In Dally Portland Journal.), The answer to an outside establish ment that sought printing In Portland was. "The city of Portland does not go outalda of Portland for anything la the printing line.' Still, there are Portlanders who go east for fu-nllure and draperies. There are Portlanders who send east for clothing, millinery and otuer attire. In numerous lltes, many are wont to buy ab.oad the things easily ob tainable at home. The profit to tha dealer and the wage for the workman they thus bestow upon oultilde devtlurs and outside workmen. The way to stimulate the establish ment of industries in Oregon is to t uy things made In Oregon. That method lr.vlio. new caplUl. It affords wigia and employment for more labor, skill ed and unskilled. It sends more mon ey through tbe channels of Industry, and trade. We raise more than fourteen mlllhn, pounds of wool every wear. But we ship almost all of It to Boston, and buy later tin flnlsne-i lunncs, pam the tranaportatlon cost twice across the continent, paying a profit to Bos ton capital, paying wages to Boston thus we Bhould have stores to rent, textile workers and, In addition, keep. fewer opportunities for people to earn a living at home.
