Apparently having Ignited the bedclotblng with a cigarette, Grover Preston, aged 30 years, was burned to death In a fire which originated In his room and caused damage of $200 to the Burn side House here today. Either from Intoxication or some other cause, Pres- ton was unable to open the door, and was found huddled against it when fre- men burst It open. Preston apparently had not been roused from sleep till the room was ablaze. Whatever attempts he may have made to escape, he did not cry out, and the firemen did not know he was In the room till they stumbled across hlB body when they battered down the door, and rushed Into the smoke-filled room. He was lying on the floor, his body braced against the door, as If he had tried to burst open the dor from the inside. His face was pillowed I if his arms. The fire had burned off both hands. I Preston was 30 years old, and was employed In a saloon nearby. That the American refugees on the United States transport Buford, due here late today, are not all destitute, as reported, was indicated in a wireless message to Mayor Wadham today. Although a few are In need of im mediate work, and penniless, it is be lieved that the majority do not need assistance. Of the 3C0 on board, only 18 men, nine women and 15 children are to be left In San Diego, the may or's message says.
