EMPLOYES STOOD IP FOR THEIR BIGHTS WHEX ATTACKED BY Bl'LOAR IAN9 AJfD ITALIANS, WHO, IT IS CLAIMED, WERE ODER I. W. W. INFLUENCE. A pitched battle was narrowly averted Saturday morning, about 9 o'clock, when several Bulgarians and Italians attacked Tom Lowe and an other colored man, at work on the blt ullthlc pavement on Cheuieketa street, between Commercial and Front streets. On account of the condition of the progress of the work, Super intendent Nicholas W. Scharf an nounced that a single crew wguld be worked today, Instead of a double crew, as during the past several days. This" was unsatisfactory to the men. who have been Importuned by the I. W. W. workers lately regarding their supposed rights as workmen. On ac count that half of the men were laid off, Tom Nldnoff, the aggressor In the altercation, was going to quit work, when Lowe, the foreman of tho rak ing crew, tried to dissuade him from quitting. He demurred to this Inter ference, and soon became very angry. He made a rush toward Lowe, saying. "let's get the black s of a b . This Lowe and his colored associate re sented, and with shovels In hand the Bulgarians and Italians rushed to ward the raking crew. Lowe used his rake to defend himself, and the oth ers had their shovels. At one point the colored men were ready to wipe out their assailants. Nldnoff was struck by the rake of Lowe, and quite a severe wound was made in his left arm. This stopepd the row, and both bides soon became quiet.
