CAPITAL BAKERY 43S Court Street Phone 964 L ACTS Of STREETS AND SEWERS A resolution was passed by the council calling for the improvement of South High street from Mill to Bush, with El Oso pavement. Con siderable difficulty has existed with relation to getting the property own ers together on this street, but everything seems to be settled now, and the improvement will be made. A resolution was also passed for the improvement of Twenty-third from Center to State with Dollarway pavement. The contract will not be signed by the mayor, however, until the state which owns property on the street Is consulted and it is ascer tained if the improvement will be satisfactory to it. The contract for the Improvement of Twenty-third from State to Mill, a small piece of street, was awarded. A remonstrance was presented with relation to the improvement of Cot tage street and the subject was re ferred back to the street committee for consideration. The improvement of Chemeketa street was postponed . for another year as the property owners were unable to agree as to the width of the pavement. All bids for the lmprovemnt of Oak street with concrete, save that of Au gust Kehrberger, were rejected. This bid, together with bids made upon other kinds of improvement, will be considered further. Before contracts can be awarded, a meeting with prop erty owners on this street will be necessary, and one will be held Fri day. The engineer was instructed to prepare plans for concrete improve ment for Seventeenth Btreet from Stale to Ferry. Viewers were appointed to ap praise property necessary for the ex tcntlon of Nebraska avenue. Arc lights were ordered Installed at North Cottage and Market; North Sixth and Gaines; Front and Ship ping, and Sixth and E streets. New pluns and specifications for lateral sewers in lateral sewer district No. 15 were adopted upon resolution presented by Councilman Skalfe. POLITICAL SITUATION IS TANGLED ROOSEVELT IX THE LEAD IN WASHINGTON, BUT SOME OF THE HIG COUNTIES YET TO BE HEARD FRO.tf-WILL BE HOT CONVENTION. Seattle, April 30. Not until the state conventions meet, will either the close contests between Roosevlt and Taft In the Repubilran purtyand between Clark nnd Wilson in the Democratic party be determined. In niOHt of the counties, the delegates have not yet been chosen. In King county, the largest In the state, there will be contesting- delegations. While the progressives at the primar ies on Saturday won out and will choose 121 progressive Republican delegates at the counly convention next Saturday, the executive com mittee of the county central commit tee "handplcked" 121 delegates some time ago. I'lerce and Sxkane coun ties, the two next lagett, have not yet held their primaries. It Is rea sonably safe to say that Roosevelt will carry Spokane's 01 delegates and that he probably will also win a portion of I'lerce county's 61 dele gates. Counting Spokane's 61 votes, Roosevelt lias today 91 uncontested delegates as follows: Ferry county, 6; Whatcom, 15; Whitman, 9; Spok ane, 61. Taft has 70 uncontested delegates as follows: Ohehalls, 20; Whitman, 8; Yakima, 215; Pacific, 11. Fifteen of Whatcom's 30 delegates will be contested, as are six In Aso tin, 12 in Chelan and 121 in King. Mason county elected six unlnstruet ed delegates. The state convention will have 668 delegates, so that 335 will "control. Omitting 154 contesting delegates, so that 33.1 will control. Omitting 154 contesting delegates, It will take 257 for either faction to dominate the convention. The democratic situation Is equally tangled with contesting delegations of 150 from King county and other portions of the state. It Don't Work Thai Way. . Portland, Or., April 00. COMIC X-RAYS AND SMILES. The remedy for exceeding the speed limit by autos or motorcycles is a simple one. A small fine or personal danger, not apparently proving a de terrent, taking the license away from the owner, and not permitting him to operate a machine for periods lncreas lng with each violation ot the law, would soon stop it. Roosevelt admits making one mis take, and admits, it hard. That was the selecting of William Howard Taft as his successor. General Finzer, of the Oregon Na tional Guard, has been called to Wash lngton to confer with the war depart ment. Mid maintain them. Mayor Lachmund protested against the scheme, declaring that the resi dents on these streets were wealthy and that if they deBlred street illum ination, that thy could make up a purse and Install the posts and main tain them. If the city was to make any saving in the further lighting of the city, he believed that the money should be usd to Install lights in the outskirts for the benefit of the peo ple residing there. GRANDMOTHERS USED SAGE TEA To Darken the Hair and Restore Gray and Faded Hair to lis Natural Color. It Is easier to preserve the color of the hair than to restore it, al though It Is possible to do both. Our grandmothers understood the secret They made a "sage tea," and their dark, glossy hair long after middle life was due to this fact. Our moth ers have gray hairs before they are 50, but they are beginning to appre elate the wisdom ot our graudnioth ers in using "sage tea" for their hair and are fast following suit. The present generation has the ad vantage of the past In that It can get a ready-to-use preparation called Wycth's Sage and Sulphur Hair Rem edy. As a scalp tonic and color re storer tills preparation is vastly su perlor to tho ordinary "sage tea" made by our grandmothers.
