Novelty Betting will mark several of the scenes In 'Rebecca of Sunny' brook Farm," which is to be brought to Salem for the first time at the Grand opera house Saturday night, April 6. One act In particular the fourth Is unusual In Us arrangement The Bet shows the facade of a 'brick house," the most palatial residence In Rlverboro, the scene of Rebecca's trials and triumphs. The edifice rises for two stories and faces the audi ence, Its broad colonial doors opening In the center, and giving a glimpse of the hallway, quaint, New England stair and the century old furniture within. Great oaks shade the veranda and climbing vines make picturesque the ancient brick. The house Is the house of Miranda and Jane Sawyer, Rebecca's stern old aunts whose Puritan training and New England na tures have brought much tribulation to the ebullient Rebecca. It Is the only brick house In Rlverboro, and so enjoys the distinction that gives prestige to the habitats of the place, o THEY VVAIIT REPORT TO BE PUBLIC New York, April 5. The lumber men of the country today are direct ly challenging the policies of the de partment of commerce and labor at Washington and demanding that the department "come out into the open" with the result of Its year's Investi gation of tho alleged "lumber trust." The National Lumber Manufactur ers' association, the national organi zation of the sawmills of the coun try, representing 36 per cent of the total lumber manufacture, has ad dressed letters to President Taft de manding the publication of the find ing of the department of commerce and labor In order "that the people of this country may no longer have to depend for their opinion as to the lumber producing Industry upon In sinuations, unverified charges, sus picion or prejudices." The Investigation by the depart ment of commerce labor, was or dered by congress In December 190G, for the purpose of discovering wheth er the lumber Industry was con trolled by a combination In restraint of trade and whether the combina tion fixed and controlled prices. No report was made for three years. In January, 1910, the lumber Interests had an Interview with President Taft and, they claim, wore assured that the result of the investigation would be mude public within 30 days, Last December the lumbermen renewed their request upon the president for a. report. Secretary Nagel replied thut tho department was conducting other Inquiries and had not had time to complete the Investigation. On March 1, the National Lumber Manu facturers' association made a final appeal to President Taft for a "ver dict" on the Investigations. The lumbermen express appreciation of Secretary Nagel's acknowledgement that there Is no one dominant cor poration In the lumber Industry and show that It takes 550 of the largest sawmills to produce one-third of the annual cut. Tho final lottcr of the lumbermen urges that the Industry be shown Justice by the prompt publication of the finding of the department. The letter concludes as follows: 'We also request the courtesy of a further reply, which we would be glad to make public, together with this letter, to the end that the pub lic may understand that the lumber industry does not avoid an Interview but on the contrary, welcomes It and desires that Its results be given the widest publicity." Blinks Set w Record. Rank clearings In Portland yester day aggregated $3,590,898, the high est figure on record. The previous record was $3,289,484, on April 19, 1911. This remarkable showing Is due In part to the transfer of funds from the sheriff to the county treasurer fol lowing the close of the tax collection period, but the great bulk of the business represented the regular vol ume of trade, which constantly Is growing . - o The largest paper mill of Its kind In the world will be built by the Crown-Columbia Pulp & Taper Co., at Oregon City this summer. ''Selling lottery tickets, your honor,' aald the big policeman who supported dim eyed, palsied, poor old Jane Zugare- waskl, long past three score years, to the bar of Police Judge Sullivan's court here yesterday. "I am too old and too weak to work, judge,' said the aged woman, tears streaming down her cheeks. "I had to sell tickets for the lottery com pany to live." And she went to Jail for 20 dayB. It IB only a few blocks from Judge Sullivan's court room where the M, & F. lottery handed out the tickets which sent Jane Zugarewskl to Jail Their offices are luxurious. There are at .least four lottery com panies operating In San Francisco In open defiance of the laws. Their tick eta are peddled openly In every Btreet In the city. And In the corridor of the very court room, when Jane went to Jail half a dozen able-bodied men were selling lottery tickets at the very mo ment her punishment was meted out o IT PULL OUT THE GRAY HAIRS A Few Applications of a Simple Rem' edy Will Bring Back the Natural Color. "Pull out one gray hair and a doz en will take Its place" Is an old say. lng, which Is, to a great extent, true, If no steps are taken - to stop the caiiBe. When gray hairs appear, It Is a sign that Nature needs assis tance. It Is Nature's call for help. Gray hair, dull, lifeless hair, or hair that Is falling out, Is not necessarily a sign of advancing age, for there are thousands of elderly people with perfect heads of hair without a sin gle streak of gray. When gray hairs come, or when the hair seems to be lifeless or dead, some good, reliable hair-restoring treatment should be resorted to at once, Specialists say that one of the beBt preparations to use Is the old fashioned "sage tea which our grandparents used. The best prep aration of this kind Is Wyeth's Sage and Sulphur Hair Remedy, a prep aration of domestic sage and sul phur, scientifically compounded with later discovered hair tonics and stimulants, the whole mixture being carefully balanced and tested by ex perts. Wyeth's Sage and Sulphur Is clean and wholesome and perfectly harm less. It refreshes dry, parched hair, removes dandruff nnd gradually re stores faded or gray hair to Its nat ural color. Don't delay another minute. Start using Wyeth's Snge nnd Sulphur at once and see what a difference a few days' treatment will make In your hair. This preparation Is offered to tho public at 50 cents a bottle, and Is recommended and sold by all drug gists. J. C. .Terry, Druggist. ''What made you so late?" "I met Smlthson."
