Medical Convention Drs. .W. B. Morse and J. O. Van Winkle will attend the Oregon Medi cal convention at Portland tomor row and Dr. Morse will read a paper on "Sanitation of the Hop Field." Pleaded Not Guilty The five young men charged with disturbing a religious meeting at the Auburn school house, two miles east of the city, were arraigned before Justice of the Peace Daniel Webster this morning, and all entered pleas of not guilty. Their trials were set for Saturday morning at 10 o'clock. This time Miss Muliel Gremmels. the mar riage license clerk could not be the good Samaritan, and grant the license, but very reluctantly told the pros pective benedict of the requirements of the law. The would-be groom had, prior to this time been to see Judge Webster, of the Justice, court, and paid the necessary fee to have the cere mony performed This time the mar riage will have to be postponed. Smashed Ills Fingers Yesterday afternoon, about 4 o'clock, while John Payen was operating ' a machine at the Willamette Manufac turing company's plant, his hand was caught In such a way as to smash two of his fingers badly. Bank Brings Suit The United States National Bank yesterday filed the papers In a suit against Herman W. Barr, John Dale, C. J. Slmeral, S. F. Anderson, F. J, Barr, Ieo. Barr and Anna M. Barr This case grew out of the dissolution of the Combination Manufacturing company, which haB been In exist ence for the past few years and do ing business In Salem. Since the dis solution of the corporation, It has become necessary to bring the suit against the Individual members of the corporation. With a harmony program agreed upon between the Taft and Roosevelt factions, the state Republican con vention Is In session here today. To make sure of their strength, the sup porters of President Taft tried them selves out this morning by electing Thomas Devlne temporary chairman of the convetlon by a vote of 565 to 242. The convention then recessed until the afternoon, when the pro gram Is to be fulfilled. The convention's resolutions this afternoon will endorse President Taft and Instruct eight delegates to the national convention In Chicago for him. The Roosevelt supporters will be permitted to present resolu Hons endorsing the Colonel In a min ority report These will be defeated, the Roosovelter8 having agreed not to bolt the convention when their resolutions are turned down. A slight uproar In the hallway of the convention building was quieted Just before the sessions began. o Mint Will Continue to Operate UNITED PRESS LEASED Wine. Washington, March 27. The Call fornla congressional delegation here this afternoon declared that they be lieved all danger of the discontinu ance of the San Francisco mint as a mint, has passed. Following a hearing before the house,' sub-committee on appropria tions. Congressmen Stephens, Kent, Hays, Raker, Needham and Know land united In declaring that neither assaying nor coinage would be abol ished at San Francisco. All six were present at the hearing. "We convinced the committee," said Hayes, "I am sure, that to stop coinage and assaying nt San Fran cisco would be anything but econom icval. I think no change In the pres ent status will be made." All the California congressmen told the sub-committee that to trans- bullion and coins from Denver to San Francisco would entail great ex pense, and that the government would also lose the profits on coinage for other countries which Is now done at San Francisco. They argued also that the Pacific coast uses coins to the exclusion of other money, and ap parently were satisfied that they had made out a case which would pre vent the proposed curtailment of the mint activities. newmSco" elects her senators Santa Ke, N. M., March 27. Thomas B. Catron, of Santa Fe, and Albert B. Fall, of Three Rivers, were elected United States senators from New- Mexico today by the state legislature. Both are standpatters. Today's ballot was as follows: Fall 3D, Catron 38, Martinez. 25. Jones 23, scattering 13. Necessary to elect 35. When the roll call was completed, showing that Fall was elected, Cation was four votes short of election, but before the vote was announced enough members changed their votes to end the contest. n To Oust the S.
