OBJECTS TO POSITION Of SINGLE TAX To The Editor: In a recent Irriia of your paper Is published a news item chronicling the organization of the Marion County Taxpayers League. The league purports to be formed to reduce taxes and secure better management of public affairs. All well and good. But. the fourth clause of the obligation pledges the mem- Ders To oppose with all my might the single tax, which in itself Is vie. lous and confiscatory." It is passing strange that a body formed to effect a regulation of tax ation should set Itself up in opposl tino to the only plan offered that will relieve the burden of taxation now placed on Industry and thrift, and place It on privilege. The "single tax" ("community value tax" would be more nearly correct) simply proposes that we stop pen alizing industry for the benefit of land speculators and "dogs In the manger." A concrete example: In Salem's early days Veranl nere bought the plot of ground at State and Liberty, paying $600.00 therefor. He and his family had profitable use thereof for many years, and last year the property sold for $37,500.00. It is safe to say that the Improvements did not cost more than $7,500.00. The Verani heirs are thus ahead $30,000 that was produced by the commun ity. Would it be "vicious and con fiscatory" to take tnis community wealth for community uses? The state of Oregon and every community in it is "boosting" for Im provements, but every time a prop erty owner makes an Improvement, the assessor comes along and, act ing as the agent of the community, fines him therefor, The plea is raised that It Is unjust to tax land and lot Improvements and personal property go free. In the last analysis, no man has a perfect moral title to land to the exclusion of others. Man cannot produce land But he can produce by his labor, and In no other way, personal property and Improvements In, on and under the land. If he have possession of any such that he has not given an equivalent for, require him to make restitution, but so long as the com munity creates wealth sufficient to meet community needs, there is no Justification for taxing any other form of wealth. Such act may be likened to the father of two abled-bodied sons, who requires one son to turn over a por tion of his earnings. The father after subtracting a portion for his own needs, passes the balance on to the other son to live on In idleness. Every form Of oppression and In justice has had Its honest defenders, but future generations will charit ably smile at the memory of such or ganizations as the Marion County Taxpayers League, as we now smile at the story of that king of olden time who sat himself upon the sands and commanded the tides to be still - ARTHUR BROCK IrPOUCG It Gpoujg I lair Itopi Dandruff and Scalp Diseases, Ea tores Gray or Faded Hair To Its Natural Color. A. Clark has written the secretary of state to learn If any one by that name has been married In this state. He says In his letter that Sloan Is wanted very much and the authorl ties have been searching through several states for him. As marriage licenses are not recorded In the of flee of the secretary of state, he Is unable to give any Information. o Against Slang. The Sllverton appeal is responsible for this: "The girls In a neighboring towi have an anti-slang society. A cer tain miss was elected president: Asked If she would accept, she re piled: 'Sure, Mike, but gosh, girls I'm really short on gab. " COOPER BROTHERS' OIG SHOW REHEARSALS DAILY WITH STAB ACTORS IX THE SHAPE OF BUCKING BRONCHOS AND TYPI CAL COWBOYS BIG WILD WEST SHOW TO TAKE THE ROAD SOON INITIAL PERFORMANCE HERE. A trip to the training grounds of the "Cooper Brothers' Great West ern Shows" is enough to convince most anyone of the attractive char acter of the performance this show will exhibit when thoroughly equipped. A number of bucking bronchos are now at the training quarters and the Coopers are get ting additions to the equipment al most every day. There are several expert rope swingers and riders there now, Including Mr. West, Mr, Mace and Mr. McCoy, who have no equals in the profession for clever riding and lassoing of and from bucking horses. An exhibition was given today, witnessed by a large crowd. It Is a sight well worth see ing to witness the bucking horses struggle vainly to dislodge their rid ers irom tne saddles. The men would throw the lasso so as to catch the horses In almost every conceivable way and soon bring them to submission, after which the saddle would be "cinched", the rider mount, and the broncho do his best to throw him, but without avail. A broncho bucks and Jumps without regard as to where he is going and once an animal charged through a crowd of bystanders, scattering them like sheep. Buck Ware had the narrow est escape of all and it created a great deal of merriment, especially after it was all over and no one was hurt Buck did everything but turn a somersault and climb a tree. There was no trees to climb nnd as to why the somersault was not turned, no one knows. Suffice it to say Buck enjoyed the performance as much as the rest, even though the Incident referred to made things a little un comfortable for him for a while. The largest portion of the actors and horses has not yet arrived, bo that rehearsals cannot be yet had In full, but as soon as a few more are received, rehearsals will be held every day. When the show is ready to start, It will give Its initial per formance here and will go south a short distance, then double back and go to British Columbia. o Repels Attack of Death. "Five years ago two doctors told me I had only two yoars to live." This startling statement was made by Stlllman Green, Malachite, Col. "They told me I would die with con sumption. It was up to me then to try the best lung medicine nnd I be gan to use Dr. King's New DUcovcry. It was well I did, for today I am working and believe I owe my life to this great throat and lung cure that has cheated tho grave of anoth er victim."
