Held on suspicion of having murdered Mrs, Harriet Guyot, aged 68, of 22 Monte- vllle streets Portland, Or., and Miss Julia Francois, a nod 19, of Th Dalle, Ore., Frank Baurwaerts I under arrest here today, and deputy nhcrllls have bran sent to a camp In the Chuckwalla mountains whore he 1a alleged to have burled the bodice. Daurwaerta, who la a Belgian, win arretted early today at Imperial Junction, where he was about to board a Southern Pacific eastbound train. The arrest followed the receipt of a telegram signed by M. D. C, But man, a prospector, who claimed he aw the man bury the bodies of his a! leged victims. Officers were sent at once to Imperial Junction, to which point Baurwaerts had made his way from his camp In the mountains. The man has refused to discuss the case. According to Information given by Batman, the two women recently ad vanced $1000, with which Baurwaerts was to develop mining property he had located In the Ctmckwallas, 30 miles from Iris, a Southern Pacific desert tank statloji. The women ac companied him to the claim, whore they pitched camp. Last Sunday afternoon Butman Journeyed from his camp, two miles away, to talk with his neighbors. Baurwaerts, he said, drove him from the place at the point of a rifle. But man ascended a hill a mile away, ac- BOTH SIDES AGAI58T . Officers left Riverside today to search for the bodies. Butman ac companled them. Baurwaerts had $175 In his possession when arrested. Story Partly Confirmed. Portland, Ore., March 20. A spe cial dispatch to the Journal from The Dalles, Ore., says: . "Julia Francois was a Belgian girl, whose home was two and one-half miles from The Dalles, on Mill creek. She was the daughter of Hector Francois, a truck gardener. The family came here In February, 1910, from Vancouver, B. C. She was 19 years old. Meeting In se cret conference here today, commit tees representing the coal miners and the mine operators both con demned the minimum wage bill, de-. daring that It defeats Its own pur pose. The operators stated they have no guarantee that the miners will fulfill the bill's provisions. The government forces expect to pass the bill and secure the signa ture of King George to It on Saturday. e STREET CAB AND ' ELECTRIC COLLIDE A collision occurred at noon today at the corner of High and State streets between a street car and the construction train of the Oregon Electric railroad. The street car was going west and the train north. Both of them stopped as Is the cus tom at an Intersection and the car started at the same time as the train, but before either could be stopped they had collided, the car be ing forced off the track. The train struck the car about the center with such force that one of the passen gers, Mrs. F. Watson, was pretty badly shaken up and her wrist bruised badly. Later he conferred with Secretary Meyer. It Is believed a war of bitter personalities between Taft and Roosevelt will follow the attacks already delivered. n Two Mysterious Deaths. Naples, March 20. Marches Snlva tore Volplcelll and an unidentified American woman were found dead In a room here today at the Hotol Re sorglmento. Death in each Instance was due to revolver wounds. The po lice are Investigating. The woman resided at the Hotel Ex celsior, hut the management refused to reveal her name. BUCKNER INJURED 15 BUNA WAT Mr. C. W. Buckner,, of this city, was quite seriously injured last week In u runaway accident on his farm at Ma rlon. He was Just starting the hired man to plowing, and, as the plow was not properly adjusted, he stepped to the doubletrees to make some adjust ments In the clevis, when one of the horses started to back, and In some way the team became entangled In the harness, and started to run away, taking Mr. Buchner, who . was also caught in the tangle, along. He final ly succeeded in freeing himself, but his right leg was injured. He did not give It much attention for a few days, but, on 'coming to Salem, a few days later, he called on Dr. Fisher, and the doctor suggested going to the hospital He accordingly was taken to the Wil lamette sanatorium, and yesterday Dr. Fisher operated on the limb, and found that one of the arteries of his leg was ruptured, and that a great quantity of clotted blood had accum ulated. The clotted blood was re moved, the wound dressed, and he Is doing nicely. Mr. Buchner considers himself for tunate In not being injured any more seriously than he was, but as it Is he will be in the sanitarium several days. That Poor Tuconia Leper. See BECIITEL k BTRO SALEM WOMEN IS SENT TO ASYLUM Miss Louisa Deguire was examined before Judge Bushey just before noon today as to her sanity, and committed to the Insane asylum. Miss Deguire has been living at the home of Mrs. W. L. Wade, at 852 North Liberty, street, and Sunday ev ening the police were called there to quell a disturbance, which consisted of a quarrel and fight between Miss Deguire and Mr. and Mrs. Roselle. It seems as though In the altercation that both of the Rosells were beaten and assaulted by "Miss Deguire, and a warrant was Issued for her arrest. The warrant was served this morning by Constable Lewis and Officer Burk hart, and considerable difficulty was encountered In bringing the accused to the justice court. She was finally arraigned, and here, and as at the time of her arrest, she showed signs of Insanity. Failing to satisfy the judge of her good faith to appear be fore blm at the trial, which was set for tomorrow, the prisoner displayed more symptoms of Insanity.
