HAY WARD 120,000,000, IS TO BE WORKED AGAIN. nxiTiD prbks i.ero wihk.I San Francisco, Jan. 31. The famed old Eureka mine at Sutter creek, which netted Alvlnza Hayward flO, 000,000, It was learned today, l to be put Into operation again by Colonel Edward H. R. Green, son of Hetty Green, It present owner, Since a dis astrous fire, 20 year ago, awept off the buildings, and left the 2200-foot shaft to cave In and become Impaa able, the mine ha been Idle, and be came four live were lost In the fire. Mr. Green ha persistently refused to reopen the mine for further develop ment. Many Pacific coast promoters from time to time sought Mrs. Green In New York, to purchase the mine, but she Invariably turned down offers of $2,- 000,000. the amount her husband paid Hayward for the property. She demanded $2,600,000 for the mine Just a it stood. Colonel Green, who Is In Snn Fran, Cisco, Is going to visit tho mine and probably will order work to start at once to clear the ruins, preparatory to reviving the property. MAY SETTLE MATTER BY ARBITRATION When the Dartenders' union holds Its meeting Sunday -for thai ia the only day In which a bartender really has an hour of rest, the members will probably be confronted with tho proOHltlon of arbitrating the ques tion of difference existing between them and the saloon men with rela tion to tho brulo of wages to be paid In the" city..; , The union oeked that the low scale of Wage be Axed at. $18 per week, The saUnin men' reply a majority of them was a refusal and the tear ing down of the union card In their establishments. Since then, bow- ever, the other unions of the city have taken a hand In the fight, and the saloon men are thinking better of It, and It Is understood tbat they are suggesting arbitration. The other unions are now coming to the assistance of the bartender, letter have been sent out that any member of the different union of the city who are caught patronizing the two non-union naloong In the city will be' lined. It la believed that this will effectually put a boycott on these Institutions so far as union men are concerned. In other ways also the other un ions arc rallying to the aid of the bartenders, and It may.be that the right will be won without strike, a thing, which the aiembers f the bar tender' union are adveree to. The member of the onion feel that their request for a raise? from $15 to Ilia week U but a reaso-aable one. , o .
