"THE RED ROSE" AT THE GRAND IN FEBRUARY (P.y Frances Jolliffe, In San Francisco (Bulletin.) "The Red Rose" became last even ing a merited ovation to Zoo Harnett, very late of San Francisco, now with out boundaries. The show Itself is tuneful enough and danceful, and you don't need to be so doggone tired to enjoy it. It is one of those affairs very frequent of late, tagged Paris, where department store French is spoken and department store articles are exposed with their Paris tag9 manufactured west of the East river, New York. The girls apiiear in harem mother hubbards and one lady gets a recall on the plaid uppers of her hose. As for the authors, they have taken without prejudice where they found what they wante. Zoe's Is a carefully coaxed deep purple temperament, with a dark beau ty to match and a voice like a foggy morning on the bay. Zoe's ascension has been dazzling and dizzy. Like most of our Western actresses, no matter what she does or how Zoe as yet plainly makes no effort at art she is interesting. Her ideas of a good time on the stage Is to whoop it up all the time, an Idea evidently shared by her delighted audience. Thus Zoe acsends. If there must he a fault found with the vivacious Zoe it is that she tries too hard to be devlisii. To the big lady In the company, Grace Ellsworth, deviltry conies more natural. Hers is a native vitality rather than vivacity she is a remark ably handsome woman, and, witli a little managerial nursing, would got a few ovations ot her own. Her danc ing is the best thing in the show. 1 You can find all the usual charac ters on the program. The two old American millionaires out for a good time in Paris, the son who wants to marry the poor Bohemian with a strawberry mark on her arm or some such ideijiflcation for a baron father all the old crowd are back again in "The Red Rose." The best one of the lot is the actor who looks like things 'you see in cheeses," Edwin Burns by name. Ernest Lacrtiy. who nlavs the Englishman you also saw in the Anna Held show, Is phasing, and Joseph Standish Is good as the picture deal er, if he does try so hard to be funny. There is a "Student's Glide" that alone would save a much worse enter. tainment. Altogether, as musical shows go, "The Red Rose" is a satis factory entertainment in an ambitious direction.
