TAKES FUSS AT N0OX CURED SEXT DAT COUNCILMAN RIGD0N CONFESSES HIS INABILITY TO SEE WHAT FIRE ESCAPES HAYE TO DO WITH TnE QUESTION OF LI-CENSES. Discovering 'the most preposterous thing he had ever heard of in his life," Councilman RIgdon arose from his chair In the council chamber last evening, and for a little while lam basted Its originator Councilman LaLfky. The discovery was made by the councilman when Councilman Lafky, whose hnads rests an ordinance to reduce the licenses of the theatres In the city stated that he did not Intend make a report on it until he could ascertain whether the theatre owners would install proper safeguards against fires In the buildings. I can see no relation between these two things," said Councilman RIgdon, after several councllmen had given utterance to the same expression. "I cannot see why the high license ordinance should depend on the instal lation of proper fire protection by the theatres. Are we putting a premium on human life? Are we going to let death traps exist, even though the shows pay a $1000 license a day? It Is the most preposterous thing I ever heard of In my life. If the theatres are not safe then make them so. Now could go on and talk on this sub- iect all nluht but you all see the point." Councilman Lafky then explained that the present licenses were paid until March 1, and that he was using the ordinance in his hands as a club to compel the theatre owners to so equip their theatres that they will be safe against fire. After a little more discussion on the subject a motion was made that a thorough inspection be made of the theatres In the city. o QUESTIONS OF HIGH LICENSE UP TO COUNCIL PROPOSITION TO INCREASE THE LIQUOR LICENSE FROM $600 TO 1900 FAILED TO GO THROUGH. BUT WILL COME UP AGAIN NEXT WEEK. 'Unable to obtain unanimous consent the advocates of a higher liquor 11 cense for the saloons in the city were unable to bring about Its pas sage last evening at the council, and It was referred after its second read ing to the ordinance1 and license com mittee. When those committees sub mlt a report on it at the next meeting, and when it comes up for final consid eration it is likely that a lively scrap will ensue as it is known that the liquor men have friends In the coun cil, but it is not believed enough of them to prevent the passage of the ordinance or to bring about any ma terial reduction. The ordinance, as presented last ev ening raises the license of saloons from f GOO to $900, and that of malt houses from $400 to $500. The drug gist license remains the same, $300, and so do all other licenses, "Fuss" Rheumatism Care Causing Excitement Among Rheumatics Rush for Remedy Results In Hundreds of Quick Cures.
