LAND OFFICER DOES SOME CLEVER SLEUTH WORK AND LOGICAL REASONING THAT GETS HIS MAX. When Day Officer Burkhardt Sat urday evening arrested Bert War ford, former mailing clerk at the state house during the legislature, Just as he was entering the Imperial Hotel, at Portland, he completed as clever a piece of detective work as has ever been executed in this city. Warford is charged with extracting from the mall a check belonging to Miss Elizabeth Lord, and yesterday atfernoon practically confessed to the officers. The check was sent to Miss Lord by Frank Meredith, secretary of the State Fair Board, to cover a premium of $15 for flowers she had on exhibition during the fair. Miss Lord never received It, but In the course of time It came back to the secretary apparently properly en dorsed by her, and also containing the endorsement of Bert Chlmm. A few months ago the case was turned over to Officer Burkhardt. Learning that Warford had been enrtusted with the duty of mailing the letter con taining the check, his 'suspicions were directed toward him. He secured samples of his handwriting, and It re sembled so strongly the endorsement on the check, that he decided to ar rest him. Warford, when confronted with the charge maintained that he wa Inno cent, but afterwards admitted his guilt, and offered to settle provided the case against him would be drop ped. o STREET CAR WILL COLLECT "FAIRS" PLEASE house this evening," and he " has earned the right to play It through the many successes In comedy roles. Last year Mr. Ebner was with "The Time, the Place and the Girl;" he made good, but he had a hard road to travel when he assumed, the lead ing role in "Three Twins," as the comedian who formerly played It had ben lauded by every newspaper In the country. However, Mr. Eb ner went to work and discovered new possibilities In the quaint role, and the result Is that the critics who praised the previous delineator of this role are now giving Mr. Ebner praise of an equal volume. With en tire new costumes, even more beauti ful and expensive than used In the production of last year, with many new and surprising electrical effects, with a complete n'w outfit of scen ery, the production of "Three Twins" this year Is one of the blggesta hits of the season, and you will agree with this when you see It. o A Charmlag YTanua Is one who Is lovely in face, form, mind and temper. But It's hard tor a roman to be charming without health. A week, sickly woman will be nervous and Irritable. Constipa tion and kidney poisons show In pim ples, blotches, skin eruptions -and a wretched complexion. But Electric Bitters always prove a godsend to women who want health, beauty and friends. They regulate stomach, liver and kidneys, purify the blood; give strong nerves, bright eyea, pure breath, smooth, velvety skin, lovely complexion and perfect health. Try them. 60c at J. C. The large auditorium was beautifully doc orated with streamrrs of evergreen and clusters of Oregon grape. The balcony railing was completely hid den with fir boughs and the choir platform was almost entirely filled by two large Christmas trees. Silver stars were hanging from all the pos sible places and aa they swung and turned, sparkled beautifully as the lights played upon them. . Almost without exception, the pro gram was given by the Sunday school children. Their first dialog, repre senting the arrival of children from other lands who told of their own Christmas . time, was particularly pleasing and instructive. The cos tumes were especially good. But the feature of the evening was the arrival of Santa Claus, who came sliding down the chimney with his large pack of good things, to fill the hearts and the stomachs of the little fellows with Joy. Not single child was forgotten and for once In the hi i tory of such entertainments, there was enough to go around and to spare. m m tmHHmHwmH We Wish You AH1 i A Very Children Cry FOR FLETCHER'S CASTORI A Piles Cared la Six to H Days. Miller, of the en tertainment committee has been rum aging through old books and new ones and the revelers will perhaps not lack amusement The things they are going to have to eat would take a column to describe and the carmen will probably fast for a couple of days so they will be in shape to "take on" as much as possible.
