"BABY MINE" NATURALLY IS A "HOWLER"! r HOOSTEK BANQUET WAS GREAT. (Continued from page 1.) of the speakers, and If enthusiasm and boosting speeches can ba relied upon as a guide, It begins to look now as though the committee's plan to launch a campaign for the endow ment fund which shall reach all four corners of the state, will be realized. T. S. McDanlel, president of the board of trustees, acted as toast master and he wittily introduced the speakers. The first speaker of the evening was C. B. Moore, of Port land. He maintained that the school since its establishment had contrib uted at least five million dollars to the city. He significantly com pared this with the contributions made by the city of Salem for the in stitution. Denouncing the rich high schools of learning for the intemperance and vice prevailing in them, Bishop Smith made an eloquent and master ful address. "I seriously question," he , said, "the usefulness of the wealthy insti tutions of higher learning and I was not surprised when I read Crane's attack upon them. The article may have been exaggerated but I warn you now that there was enough truth in it to challenge the atten tion of the nation. When you con sider that the many sons of wealthy men attending these institutions, have nothing to do but spend their j money and have no responsibility so i far as the future Is concerned, it Is not surprising to find conditions of intemperance and vice prevailing. Smoking, drinking, carousing and vice are characteristics of these in stitutions to an alarming degree and the hope of the young man today Is the christian colleges." "A campaign for an endowment of $550,000" was the subject of the speech of Dr. Fletcher Homan, presi dent of the school. There . was an old endowment fund of $125,000, he said; $100,000 have been promised by Senator Booth; $50,000 by James J. Hill, and $n.(in0 has been sub- Manager Waters announces that he has completed arrangements with Wm, A. Brady, Lttd., whereby the production of "Baby Mine" will be brought Intact to the Grand on Wed nesday, September 2", coming direct from opening the new Cort theater at San Francisco, where "Baby Mine" scored a phenomenal success. This necessarily means a great deal to the theatre-goers of this city, in asmuch as Mr. Brady is sending the New York company, which has played almost continuously for an entire year at Daly theatre. So successful has this comedy been In New York, that Sir Charles Wyndham. of the Crite rion theatre, London, England, made a remarkably quick trip over, saw "Baby Mine," and immediately se cured the 'howler," as the advance notices in the London papers de scribe it, for opening on February 22d, last, at his London play house, where It scored a tremendous hit. Mr. Brady has been overwhelmed with foreign offers for this great success, and before many weeks it will be played in every language on the face of the civilized earth. The, thread of human Interest and roaring fun from a seemingly endless vent, so offered In the sensational comedy, "Baby Mine" is the reason of its utter success. The profound praise, from people in all walks of life, who enjoy sterling fun and laughter, has Immediately followed the presentation of the comedy In this country and London, "Baby Mine" Is surrounded by ev erything to create continuous merri ment and good-natured mirth and lit eral comedy luxuriates through the play. Enthusiasm Is aroused at the start with the unfolding conditions occasioned by a very young and pre varicating but innocent wife. Ener getic humor and vociferous laughter are the Important facts at all times. The machinations and manipulation of well-meaning but Ul-advlsed friends of the young wife who has been awakened to the Importance of "sweet motherhood" to bring about a reconciliation, with a self-exiled hus band, generates many supremely amusing and side-splitting conditions. The fun and pleasure Is genuine, and joy never .feasted higher than that which followed the conditions provoked by witnessing "Baby Mine.'' It will be at the Grand Wednesday, September 27.
