Curtlss at 1:15 o'clock this afternoon rose from the waters of Sun Diego bay, made a flight of a minute and a half and landed on the water safely. It was the first f-at of the kind ever accomplished. The Hlght was made in his .specially constructed hydroplane, his biggest biplane, with pontoons in place of the usual wheels. Two horse theieves are dead and two others are badly wounded as the result of a bat tle with a sheriff's posse near Lords luirg. N. M. according to news reach ing here today. The dead and wound ed are believed to have been sympa thizers of the Mexican revolutionists and were supposed to have been stealing horses for them. Several of the thieves escaped. THE TOLL WILLAMETTE LEGISLATURE IS IN SESSION onj Last night the Phllodorian Webster Literary societies, now organ Ized Into the senate and house of rep - resentatlves of the state of Oregon, held a session In the University cha.p- el, and heard the lnaugural'address of of Governor Kellar The governor was administered the oath of office by Chief Justice Patterson, and his ver sion of the oath was extremely hu morous. Governor Kellar made a somewhat short address regarding his party feelings, and made several witty and laughable statements regarding the chief justice. He spoke regarding a $2,000,000 endowment which he had procured for Willamette University, and gave in detail what he wished done at said university.. After the governor ha finished t he two legisla tive bodies and visitors adjourned to their respective halls, where various matters of state were considered. Ev erything is done in a real legislative fashion, and the participants are re ceiving excellent training. There ts no school at the universi ty today, on account of the observ- I ance of college prayer dr.y, and Dr. Patterson gave the studtmts a holiday There will be chapel exercises in the morning and prayer meetings in the afternoon.
