Luke Lea, w ho today was elected Vnited States senator from Tennessee, is the owner of the Nashville newspaper formerly owned by the late Senator Carmack. He received 63 votes, two more than the necessary number. McMillan, who led the race for a week, received 48 votes. A motion to make Lea's election unanimous failed to carry. Unani mous endorsement of the plan to call upon congress to order a convention for the purpose of considering direct election of Vnited States snators was made this afternoon by the state senate. California Is the 2Sth state to en dorse the convention. The federal constitution makes It necessary that 31 states shall endorse the plan. The senate also passed a resolution ratifying the addition to the con stitution providing for an income tax. Ten states have ratified the addi tional, but 35 must do so before ii becomes valid.
