. PURDY EXPLAINS SITUATION IUE9 STATEMEM (OXKRMXG THE l-BOPOSED BRIDGES AT UWBERfi ASU BITTEVILLE. Salem, Ore., jan. 13, 1311. To ttf Editor of the Journal, Salem, Org. ru-ar Sir: Through your valuable I wish to explain to the public that was quoted or 4 rms.MiL ...i.nl written In the Capital Journal of last wnins. The Journal states that two delations appeared before the coun- court of .Marion county with refer ence to petitioning said court for tlirm to co-operate with either Newberg- or Dutteville in the construction of a bridge and that the city of New berg offered to contribute $:!0,000 towards t,ie construction thereof, if tfce said court would build the bridge tt N'-vberg. I wish to state flatly that these are not the facts, but it Is a fact that t (Mention came from Newberg and they did call on the county court, and for the purpose of seeing if the toiinty court was "on the square" on their former agreement with me. I was present on this occasion and the ociurt did not go into session, but quietly took one of the members of the Newberg delegation Into another room and what was said, or what promises were made, I know not. My promise with the court for the Butte tllle bridge Is; if I got a solid dele tion from Marion county pledged 1o tr.y Butteville bridge, that they would do nothing In any -way, shape or form against my project. I wish farther to say to the public that I "have the signature of each one of the delegates of Marion county favoring the Butteville bridge. As to the thickly populated district and the benefit to be derived by Marion tountv If placed at Newberg, I can say tbat It Is more thickly settled ad jacent to the Butteville bridge; also It is on a direct route between Salem and Portland. With reference to the Butteville ferry not being a paying proposition, will state that Marlon and Yamhill counties are paying vl2(Ki a year for a free ferry at New "berg and people travel that way to get tree ferriage, but if the bridge is placed at Butteville, there will be no need for a ferry at Newberg. Respectfully, TRI-COIJNTY PUSH CLUB. By Will E. Purdy, President. HIS BODY IS HACKED TO PIECES Chicago Jan. 19. Hacked to pieces, the body of an unidentified Italian, found In an alley way here today, las given the police a mystery to lve. The victim, believed to have been a tailor, is thought by the police to have been slain by foreign gar net workers for having "scabbed" the strike which held on here for months. The ferocity exhibited in the crime l almost unparalled in police annals. n a short-handled axe, found be 8i the body, the victim had been topped to bits. What brings the orders is- not the name of your business. It's the thing you offer to sell, or the thing you offer to do. Don't say "Carpentering and and General Repairing." Be specific. Think up the things that people need. Say, "I can make your front fence look respectable. Your satisfac tion and self-respect will more than pay for what it costs you." "I can fix up your house so the weather won't get in. It won't cost much. Maybe only an hour's work or two." "That new kitchen shed, NOW Is the time to plan it. Ring me up. There's a certain lot of good lumber In the market you can get much cheaper If you buy NOW." "Let me make those cellar stairs easy and SAFE for wife and your mother. A little cost and a, big satisfaction to you." Same rule holds good in every other busi ness. Make a definite offer of one thing the people waut. That's what brings them to the telephone.
