ONE MAN WHO MADE DIVERSIFIED FARMING PAT Portland, Ore., Nov. 25. (Special) A. C. Melsen, of Junction City, is one who has made diversified farm ing pay. Coming to Oregon In 1903 from Wisconsin, seeking a mild cli mate and a fruit country, Mr. Melsen purchased 80 acres of land near Junction' City. In 1905 he built, a modern home and planted 13 acres to apples, principally Yellow New town Pippins, with a few Balding and Spltzenbergs. This year he mar keted one carload of choice fruit. Mr. Melsen has sent several boxes of his apples to the Albany Apple show that will later be exhibited at Portland in competition with prise fruit from other sections of the state. His orchard is well cared for and the fruit was s6 heavy this year that It had to be thinned twice. Besides making the fruit growing business a success, the owner of this model place Is keeping 200 hens and six fine Jersey dairy cows. Fight fans here are accepting the offer of Hugh Mcintosh, the Australian pro moter, to match Sam Langford and Jack Johnson In London next June In good faith, and many believe the match really will be brought about. Joe Woodman, manager for Lang- ford, received a cablegram from Mcintosh today confirming the re port that Mcintosh had offered John son $15,000 and expenses for his end of the purse, and asking Woodman for terms. Mcintosh said he proposed staging the bout during Coronation week. Ho said he requested Johnson to post a $1500 forfeit. AFRAID TO HAVE ARMIES TOGETHER Toklo, Nov. 25. Japanese and Chinese officials here are .engaged today in an endeavor to straighten out a tangle that has resulted from the selection of the same district In Manchuria for the autumn maneu vers of the Japanese and Chinese troops in the Northern Chinese pro vince. As it would be dangerous to have two large bodies of Chinese and Japanese troops operating simulta neously In the same region, the Chi nese government has temporarily abandoned its plans. In connection with the maneuvers, the Japanese commander reports Hie capture of a Chinese spy In the rail road yards at Mukden. Nothing In criminating was found on his person, however, and at the request of the Chinese authorities he was allowed his freedom. BUSINESS CARDS. PIANO TUNINO . . Lntelloa ' 4.
